Aren’t these people paying attention to Obama’s trained economists? They assure us that massive increases in the cost of labor will have no effect on employment.

If they truly want to help, they should repeal the minimum wage laws.

Raising the minimum wage just might have unforeseen consequences. Right now it is the bottom rung of the employment ladder where almost anyone can get hired and have a chance to learn the basics of coming to work, reacting to the public or the demands of the job and pleasing the boss.

As the wage being paid raises, so does the bar of competence and even the first rung of employment may become more competitive which in turn could leave a growing percentage unemployable as people who have learned some workplace skills and mannerisms start showing up to apply.

Reminds me of the young guy who left a message on my answer machine last night about my alma mater’s annual fund drive - no doubt, most likely a student at the same college. He spoke in “mumble-speak” with no clear pronunciation/enunciation, no cordial, pleasant expression at all. I wonder how in the world people expect to get a $10+ an hour job when they cannot even speak properly, coherently, intelligently.

This is their intention: expand the class of unhappy people by keeping them poor. Then claim that they have to take more money from people who are earning more.

Complete misery and control is what they want.

If there has to be a minimum wage, why not make an exemption for teenagers or students so they can do something productive and make a few bucks.

Treat black kids like white kids. Hire them as interns. isn’t the minimum wage for college educated interns approximately zero?

The Left wants blacks ALL on the federal dole except the ones who are helping the Left rule as bureaucrats and enforcers. And it gets the added benefit that blacks in the cities increasingly keep the middle class off balance with their increasing criminal activity which will be enhanced by putting more of the young men out of work.

As we discuss the President's newest tool for dividing Americans--something he calls, "income inequality," perhaps Economics Professor Dr. Walter E. Williams's common-sense, and economically sound, advice might be helpful.

That advice may be found here. Essays on other subjects, such as government-controlled minimum wage levels, also are available at the site.

Williams introduces the "income inequality" matter in this paragraph:

"Democrats plan to demagogue income inequality and the wealth gap for political gain in this year's elections. Most of what’s said about income inequality is stupid or, at best, ill-informed. Much to their disgrace, economists focusing on measures of income inequality bring little light to the issue. Let’s look at it." - Walter E. Williams

The following magazine ad was published many years ago, and utilized Dr. Williams clear message on the consequences of government-forced minimum wage laws. Since his conclusions are based on sound principles, they are as valid today as they were then.
