Rescue public discourse from ‘mass stupidity’ ... (Malaysia)

KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 12 — As a growing chorus of extremism threatens to dominate public dialogue, former minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim said Putrajaya must coax reason and sensibility back into local politics for Malaysians of all races to once more communicate intelligently with each other.

Saying that political discourse has devolved into “mass stupidity”, the former de facto law minister warned of the consequences of allowing public exchanges to be dictated by those whom he described as aloof to views and ideologies different from their own.

“Today, the prime minister cannot expect Perkasa and Utusan (Malaysia) to talk intelligently to the public on many issues. They are not interested in engaging those with whom they disagree,” Zaid said, who added that the Malay rights group has so far responded to his previous invitations for a public debate by calling him names.

“I hope the prime minister realises the dangers posed by mass stupidity and the lack of reason in political discourse. He must know that in Europe today, the fascists are doing essentially the same thing as Utusan and Perkasa.”

In an essay made available to The Malay Mail Online, Zaid enumerated instances of creeping fascism in Europe that he likened to his examples of the Malay rights group and Umno-owned newspaper Utusan Malaysia.

Mahathir is coming back, at least in spirit if not personally. Let’s invoke Sharia and kill all the Chinese so the Malay can flounder around in their fundamentalist fury.

Fortunately, most Malay have been smarter than that recently. The Chinese/Malay split is a festering sore that can unite the Malay at times. The businesses are owned and run by Chinese in spite of past legal “reforms” discriminating against them.

That said, Chinese are clannish keeping everything in the family and extremely aggressive. The quite look down on the Malay. The biggest problems the Malay have are Islam and a lesser work ethic than the Chinese (I’d say most everyone has a work ethic that suffers in comparison to the Chinese).

After spending one week in Malaysia, I learned that the real rivalry is between Chinese/Malay vs. Indians. The Malay-Malay are playing neutral amdist the rivalry.
