They still have to pay $$$ out of pocket for those types of expenses until they meet their deductible which will happen NEVER for a normal family that doesn't have a catastrophic illness. That is true in many cases. About the only benefit is that pre-deductible medical charges will generally be at the insurance company negotiated rate, which can be substantially lower.
