NH:Armed Citizen Confronted at Starbucks

A mother needed to use the Internet to order items required by a minor emergency on the road.   Naturally, she turned to Starbucks.

Starbucks has become known nationally for its neutral policy on the carry of firearms.  If you are following the law, Starbucks is willing to take your money in exchange for their product.  Here is what happened in a New Hampshire Starbucks as written by the mother it happened to, Riana, on opencarry.org:

Here I am, minding my own business, sitting with my husband and son in the Starbucks on Main Street. I had several things to take care of, as our vacation plans have been drastically altered by a broken-down vehicle, and needed internet access to handle them.

A man came up to me, pointed at my holstered sidearm, and asked rather indignantly, "What is that?"

I replied, "That is my defensive sidearm, sir."

"Well, I'm glad you feel safer, but I don't." he said.

"I'm sorry you feel that way, sir," I said calmly.

The complainer then went immediately (and loudly) went to the staff, demanding they "do something" about me. The staff simply responded that I was well within my rights, and they would do nothing. He told them he didn't feel safe, and another customer piped in that he indeed felt safer with me carrying a sidearm. The complainer then left the store in a huff, hollering that he would never come back to this store, because of the policy.

Later the customer who piped up came by and thanked me for carrying. The staff never made any comment to me. My son did note, however, that the complainer drove off in a car with Massachusetts plates, so that explains a lot.
This is an unusual experience for people who openly carry firearms.  I have openly carried firearms for many years, and the number of negative encounters, all milder than the one above, can be numbered on the fingers of one hand.   It might help that I have been told that I have a mild and inoffensive appearance.  I have also been told that I look like a policeman.  Fortunately, I have never had another person loudly complain to management that I was allowed to carry a firearm.

Because she was a woman. I daresay that yellow bellied coward would never have started that conversation with a male or a minority.

Clearly she wasn't wearing her 'WARNING: I have PMS and a GUN' t-shirt...the whiny little marxist wouldn't have had the 'balls' to approach her under those circumstances.

I’m really surprised that he/She didn’t tell the complainer to “F” Off and mind his. Own business.

Nope.

It’s “projection”.

The complainant knows that if he was carrying, he’d be likely to shoot someone for no good reason, so he believes that everyone carrying is likely to shoot someone for no good reason.

Reminds me of an incident a few years back: My brother, his son and I were in Inyo County (eastern Sierras) shooting at a locally accepted ‘unofficial shooting range’.

I was shooting a pistol (a .38) when a MAMIT on a bicycle rode over from a nearby trail to confront us. My nephew listened to the man from a distance, then went to the gun bag and picked up a magnum. He then fired three shots in rapid succession at the targets.

The MAMIT’s friend (who was now next to him) then said: “Come on man, let it go.”

My nephew then said to us: “What kind of an idiot confronts a total stranger who has a gun?”

I’d have told them they didn’t need to feel afraid, hoplophobia is treatable.

We had a 2nd Amendment support day for the S’bux location here in GreenAcres (NW of ATL) a few weeks ago with numerous citizens participating in their right to open or concealed carry while overpaying (!) for their coffee drinks.

Of course liberals never make any sense so it is obvious a liberal would go with choice number 2.

It’s “projection”. That is the left to a t. They always see the evil and vices that lurk inside them in everyone else. Hence, they must be controlled so must everyone else.

I believe Sigmund Freud correctly noted the strong correlation between those with serious sexual immaturity issues and an unreasonable fear of weapons.

He posited that both disorders stem from the same underlying cause of fear of responsibility and insecurity.

The same mental disorder of insecurity underlies much of the modern Democrat party. It’s why they want big government making all the decisions for them.

That person didn’t feel safe but they were unarmed and they have a big mouth.

I still will not shop Starbucks since they refused to put the stores in the war zone because the were against the war. Refused to give them for the troops.

Her response included “I’m sorry.” This is an issue I’ve been working on myself. When somebody disagrees with or has some other issue with my political philosophy I tend to rebut with with, “Sorry but,” and then continue with what I was going to say. I’m trying to remember that I don’t have to apologize for my thoughts and actions if I’m correct in them, and she should not have said this either. Just a thought, not a condemnation.

A good response to the guy, “You say you don’t feel safe, yet you feel safe enough to confront me. I believe your actions speak louder than your words. You are lying, sir.”

“What kind of an idiot confronts a total stranger who has a gun?”

Your nephew is wise. :-)

It's worth mentioning, however, that the man confronting you likely realized that an average Joe, plinking at targets at a "shooting range" in the middle of the day ..... didn't present much of a threat. He could accost you, bluff and bluster, to his heart's content. So long as he didn't present a physical threat you'd likely have enough common sense for everyone involved and he'd be perfectly safe.

Then, he could go along, feeling smug and superior, and maybe thump his chest a little bit for the girls ("You shoulda been there! Today I told off this redneck loser and he had a gun. Gave it to him, but good!!!!) at the local biker vegan, fair-priced, free-range coffeeshop and collective.

I'd wonder if he'd display bravado like that with a drug dealer sporting the same .38, in the hood, at 2am. Unlikely.

Liberals: the stupidest most intolerant d-bags on the planet. More gun control = less crime in their mind only, but in the real world, an armed force at the Navy yard travesty would have meant many less lives lost.

:: A man came up to me, pointed at my holstered sidearm, and asked rather indignantly, “What is that?” ::

As this was a citizen-to-citizen exchange, the correct response should have been:

“Move along, ya nosey-nellie. Nobody wants to respond to your emotionalism.”

Seriously, when you are within your rights, you need not explain yourself.

If Washington, D.C. had 'open carry'; the twelve that died yesterday might still be alive.

No, probably not. The perp didn't start shooting until he was inside an access restricted facility. It doesn't mean that there wouldn't have been people who were armed, but most workplaces don't allow firearms inside the facility anyway.
