Trump, George W. Bush among donors to Abbott’s campaign for Texas governor

AUSTIN — What do Donald Trump and former President George W. Bush have in common? They both want Greg Abbott to be the next governor of Texas.

Both men are among the contributors listed in Abbott’s latest campaign finance report to the state, which covers fundraising over six weeks in June and July that the Legislature was in special session.

Trump, the millionaire developer, gave the Republican candidate for governor $25,000 last month. Bush contributed $5,000 in July.

Abbott, the state attorney general, raised $1 million, while Republican rival Tom Pauken, the former state GOP chairman, raised $44,395. During the same period following her headline-grabbing filibuster against an abortion bill, potential Democratic opponent Wendy Davis raised $412,000.

Abbott’s contributors also included several billionaires.

His biggest givers include Dallas investor and nuclear-dump owner Harold Simmons, who gave $150,000; California investor Peter Thiel, the initial big investor in Facebook, $100,000; Dallas billionaire and yachting enthusiast Darwin Deason, $100,000; and Fort Worth oilman and investor Lee Bass, $100,000.

The reports give a snapshot of the initial round of political fundraising following the regular legislative session. Although politicians are not allowed to raise money during a regular session, they can do so during special sessions.

During the full period from June 26 through July 30, Abbott raised $4.2 million to launch his campaign for the Republican nomination for governor. During that same period, which followed her filibuster that attracted national attention, Davis raised $1.3 million.

Well, if that doesn’t set off your alarm bells, nothing will.

Of course ‘little Greggie’ has learned from the Ted Cruz campaign. This explains why he doesn’t debate his opponents. He’s a terrible debator and if an underdog debates him, he would look more foolish than David Dewhurst when he debated Ted Cruz. Spineless Abbott’s strategy is to buy his votes and claim he’s campaigning for governor without an oppossing candidate. This strategy is effective. That’s how he got elected attorney general of Texas.

Texas Governors Race: Tom Pauken Jumps In and Runs a Little to the Right
by Bryan Preston
August 15, 2013
With Gov. Rick Perry riding off into the sunset next year, and maybe running for president in 2016, Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is running for governor of the Lone Star State. Abbott is arguably the second most popular Republican in Texas (behind Sen. Ted Cruz), he’s armed with a $22 million war chest, has assembled a staff full of seasoned professionals, and he’s an inspirational stump speaker.

Greg Abbott:

Human Trafficking Prevention Manual Released by Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott

http://trailblazersblog.dallasnews.com/2013/09/texas-national-guard-asks-greg-abbott-if-it-should-extend-military-same-sex-benefits.html/

Texas military brass has told Texas soldiers to apply for their benefits at federal bases, so as not to deny them benefits being offered to all other military personnel. And Texas and Mississippi, so far, are the only states to defy the defense department directive.

Now, as to guessing how the attorney general might respond, we can look at history. Greg Abbott has intervened to stop divorces between gay couples married legally in other states, saying Texas doesn’t recognized their marriage and so they cannot get a divorce.

Abbott has told cities, school districts and counties that they could not extend health coverage to domestic partners if the policy defines their relationship as similar to a marriage. The benefits would be extending recognition to a relationship as a marriage that is not a marriage under state law, was his reasoning.

And Abbott most recently has decried a San Antonio ordinance extending gay people protections in housing, jobs and public accommodations. In a letter to Mayor Julian Castro, Abbott cited the Texas Constitution as part of his basis for strongly opposing the ordinance.

Abbott is on a vid. interview (Yahoo) where he says we need comprehensive immigration reform. Bush and Simmons both are red flags for the cheap labor cartels in TX.

“sez here Pauken’s raised $22 million.”

If your gonna make an attack against your opponent, it’s not a good idea to start with a statement that is so easy to verify as false. Isn’t is common knowledge Pauken hasn’t been bankrolled by billionaire Texas Democrat attorneys, unlike Abbott? I haven’t heard of any Texas gay activists say they want to endorse Pauken for governor either. Just saying Abbott opposes gay marriage doesn’t mean he’s the only candidate running for Texas governor who is fighting gay activism.

Can you please provide a link that shows Greg ‘Open Doors’ Abbott making that statement? I recall seeing the video too but I don’t know where to find it. Don’t forget, Abbott opposes the Texas state government funding a border fence. He believes that Obama would do better than him at builing that fence.

Greg Abbott did sing “Shake You Down”...so not surprised he has big donors..

You know if a Bush is giving you money...it means candidate is Open Borders, Pro-Illegal Alien Amnesty, and a Liberal Free Trader....none of which are conservative

In Texas the conservative posturing and rhetoric of the established Republican politicians is deeper than a ten gallon hat.

The Perry’s and others do an excellent job of hustling the grassroots with tough talk and emotional speechmaking while being in the back pocket of big money people with big money agendas like taxpayer bailouts.

BUT TED CRUZ BROKE THROUGH THE FOG AND I HOPE OTHERS FOLLOW SO TEXAS CAN STAND TALL IN THE TOUGH DAYS AHEAD.

Did anybody ask Abbott what’s his opinion on the Syrian War? It’s a good question to ask, since many US soldiers come from Texas. Oh wait, Abbott avoids visiting the editorial boards of Texas newspapers, so we may never know the answer to that one.
