Russia: Strike on Syria could mean nuke disaster
Houston Chronicle ^ | 09/05/2013 | AP

VIENNA (AP) — Russia is warning that a U.S. strike on Syria's atomic facilities might result in a nuclear catastrophe and is urging the U.N. to present a risk analysis of such a scenario.

The warning comes from Russia's Foreign Ministry spokesman, Alexander Lukashevich. He said in a statement Wednesday that a strike on a miniature reactor near Damascus or other nuclear installations could contaminate the region with radioactivity, adding: "The consequences could be catastrophic."

IAEA spokeswoman Gill Tudor told the AP in an email Thursday that her agency is ready to "consider the questions raised" by Lukashevich if it receives a formal request to do so from Moscow.

Grass Fire Email alert: left off the request for funding.

GRASSFIRE ALERT:

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 10-7 this afternoon to approve a resolution authorizing President Obama to use military force against Syria in response to President Bashar Assad’s suspected chemical-weapons attack on civilians last month.

But the rushed vote reportedly broke Senate rules for moving legislation through the committee process. According to The Daily Beast, a senior GOP Senate aide called it “a rush to war behind closed doors,” adding:

“We were told there was a need to have a thoughtful and public debate about how this nation goes to war, but this seems to be about simply getting a resolution done to cover the President.”

Today’s actions allow for a vote by the full Senate as soon as Wednesday and enable the Democrat-controlled “upper chamber” to pass a war resolution before the House can write and pass one of its own.

Moments after the vote, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East, told FOX News that when Representatives return to Capitol Hill next week, Obama’s plan will likely by-pass committee and move directly to the chamber floor for a vote.

+ + Should Congress Back Obama On Syria?

Congress’ month-long summer recess ends in just five days — with a full Syria vote expected almost immediately. That gives grassroots Americans less than a week to make their voices heard!

From the Rose Garden on Saturday, President Obama said, “While I believe I have the authority to carry out this military action without specific congressional authorization ... I’m asking Congress to send a message to the world that we are ready to move forward together as one nation.”

But our “Radical-in-Chief” has it wrong ... again. According to Article 1, Section 8, Clause 11 of the U.S. Constitution, “Congress shall have the power ... to declare war.”

That’s why grassroots Americans must act now! It’s liberty-loving Americans who need to send a message to Congress about backing Obama’s plan. Tell your Senators and Representative what you think about authorizing the President to launch a military strike against Syria.

+ + Make Your Voice Heard On Capitol Hill!

Yesterday, Grassfire launched a Syria quick poll to empower our team members and their fellow patriots to make their voices heard. In just 24 hours, more than 28,000 of you have responded — with 97 percent voting “No!” on granting Obama authority to conduct military operations in Syria.

Grassfire will deliver the quick-poll results to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) next week, prior to any vote. You can use the time remaining to expand the impact of your “vote” by faxing your two Tennessee Senators, Representative and other key lawmakers.

Why? What is there in Syria that Russia would be willing to go to such lengths to protect?

It is not about what is in Syria, it is about who has control of the Syrian land. They smell like people from Saudi and Qatar. Has to do with big bucks.

None of these so called warmongers give a rats behind that some paltry Syrian sheeple were gassed. That is just the phoney excuse being used. The powers always try to find a noble reason to do evil deeds.

Probably some huge deposit of rare-earths, like there is in Afghanistan.

That would be enough for nuclear strikes? I would think it would be far less costly for Russia to do their own intervention and tell us “Relax, we got this.”

Not quite. How it unfolds is, hot war breaks out between our fleets. If the loser is Russia, they could easily follow on with a small tactical to kill our fleet. The Rubicon is crossed and DEFCONS are all 2, with a much greater possibility of a totality nuke war.

I would think it would be far less costly for Russia to do their own intervention and tell us “Relax, we got this.”

Ain't gonna happen. One, we are the ones behaving insanely here. Putin said recently, "if you can prove your claims, we're on board." Problem is we cannot. Even the forensics on the gas residue itself show it not to be of SA origin.

So, would Russia tell Assad his days are numbered, installing someone new? Well perhaps, but doubtful. Even if they did, the REAL motivation -- the pipeline access to Europe -- is not settled. War would still proceed.

Sounds to me, that the Russians are not afraid to set that "mini" reactor off themselves and then blame us.

At that point everything goes on the table and we are screwed.

I guess by “intervention” I meant more of a kabuki theater kind of thing. Intervening without really doing anything. Basically like we’re talking about doing, only even less interventionist, but the Russians could get BBC and CNNi to get footage of them wrapping up little kids in bandages and doing a couple of foot patrols (directly around their perimeter or even barracks building), and then Obama has the optics he needs to back down.

What better way to de-populate an area to build a pipeline than having it glow in the dark.

You’d have to get the Russians on board. What’s their motivation? I see none.
