Shingles : Don't take chances

Posted on 09/04/2013 1:59:18 PM PDT by deputytess

Hey Folks, I recently recovered from shingles.Still have a bit of nerve pain. I was very lucky and managed to avoid the worst through early intervention. I just want to encourage anyone out there who's had chicken pox to talk to their doctor about the shingles shot. You don't want to go through what I went through. This especially goes for my fellow "Boomers". Stress is one of the main triggers for shingles and we 50 somethings have a lot of stress. God bless you all and stay healthy.

My wife was 42 when she got the shingles.

MY daughter is 23 and just got the diagnosis.

I'm not sure that I believe it, because she's in no pain.

I was told it’s because of Obamacare.

To my knowledge, Obamacare hasn't kicked in yet......

The vaccine for shingles (Zostavax®) is recommended for use in people 60 years old and older to prevent shingles. The older a person is, the more severe the effects of shingles typically are, so all adults 60 years old or older should get the shingles vaccine.

The shingles vaccine is specifically designed to protect people against shingles and will not protect people against other forms of herpes, such as genital herpes. The shingles vaccine is not recommended to treat active shingles or post-herpetic neuralgia (pain after the rash is gone) once it develops.

“To my knowledge, Obamacare hasn’t kicked in yet...... “

I asked the pharmacist this and he said that they had advanced all of their prices already. I don’t know why and he couldn’t tell me. But, the price increases are real for generics that have been around forever.

Can anybody shed light on this mystery?

I was wondering if they used steroids for pain? I know they used them for eczema and other skin ailments..

Interesting thread. Had an outbreak of shingles last November around my left eye and forehead. Got to the doctor quickly and did the ten day, anti-viral protocol, plus took large doses of vitamin C, B-12 and L-Lysine.

Turned out to be a very mild case with only a few episodes of minor nerve pain and none since. Had the feeling of a mild sunburn around the outbreak, but that was the only persistent manifestation.

Lasted about two weeks with the rash taking a little longer to completely clear. Was definitely lucky compared to many who’ve had shingles.

I offer you my apology, I was dead wrong. I just called my local Walgreen pharmacy and they said that a Shingles Vaccine without insurance would cost $219.00...............Wow!

I then asked about the vaccine with insurance and they couldn't say because it depended on the copay from the insurance carrier.

I asked the pharmacist this and he said that they had advanced all of their prices already.

I had an out-of-pocket prescription when the Medicare prescription bill passed. The prescription doubled in price immediately, even though the 'benefits' of the drug bill did not go into effect for 2-3 years.

They don't need much of an excuse to raise prices.

Yes, I’ve heard you can get it anywhere, including in your eyes. That would be horrible. I let it go too long before I went to the doctor. But still, I got off easy; it was on my side. It burned and stung and itched like crazy for a good six or eight months. Thought it would never end. Definitely don’t want to go through it again. I’ll ask about the shot next time I see the doctor. Thanks.

Sorry, but you didn’t pay for it. I pay Medicare premiums monthly. I paid for it.

the thing with shingles is once you have it it can stay dormant for many years but its still there. then the day comes when you do the thing that ticks it off ... for me its the sun, i am fine if i sunbath in my home area but if i go to where the sun is stronger and do not use a sunscreen on my neck .... had my 1st encounter in my late thirties, two more times since then and i am fifty eight now and it has been at least ten years since the last time.
i did not know that the shot could help you if you had shingles already, usually a vaccine is to prevent you from getting something you never had ... will have to look into this.
