That’s exactly what I was going to say. When everybody knows everyone else’s business, as in the old days, fear of being the subject of a lot of gossip kept folks in line.

And remember the old “party lines” in the rural telephone networks. You could pick up the earphone and listen to what your neighbours were saying and you knew they had received a phone call because it rang on all the phones on the “line”.
