Because they consumed too much and probably could not be woken up (temporarily) so the parents freaked out. Also, about 10% of people get anxiety instead of sleepiness from eating too much.

Obviously you may feel like hell but there is no toxic danger from over-consuming it. The only danger is passing out and asphyxiating yourself with a pillow, etc. Someone simply needs to watch the person and make sure their airways are open.
