I am impressed. Every so often I have had an “expert” tell me bay leaves are worthless. For decades when I did not have anything any better, I used bay leaves in my grains very successfully.

Popcorn can be ground for cornmeal. I have done it many times.

Great tip - and pop corn is a good food - so is corn bread. I had that for breakfast this morning. The Indians used to take bags of cornmeal on journeys - and just chew on a mouthful of meal for energy...and make 'Journey Cake = Johny Cake = corn bread"

In the spring, you can also gather cattail flour - the pollen on the stalks - and mix with with corn meal or other flours for super extra nutrician.

BTW - Bob's Red Mill has dozens and dozens of flour mixes, pancakes/breads/grains/milk/buttermilk - oon an on - lot's of organic and gluten free - their organic gluten free pancake mix is the best ever.

their dry milk and buttermilk, when reconstituted, tastes like fresh whole milk, b-milk.

These dry good can be oven canned in canning jars to stay fresh for 20-30 years.

Swanson's vitamins sells them ALL online - cheaper than in stores AND, free shipping for order over $50.

I also get all my vitamins here as they aren't full of fillers like spermarket vitamins/supplements - and their prices are 50% or more less. They often have BOGO sales, which is when I stock up. (The gov't is intent on forcing us to have to get prescriptions for vitamins/supplement. They already have to in Germany, for ex. That's a lot of money being spent and they want a chunk.)

vitamins/supplements need to part of your stores. It will be even more vital to stay healthy if TSHTF.

dozens and dozens of varities on Swanson' Vitamins online - grains you never thought of...

What happens if you eat a 3 year old can of corn or a 5 year old can of beans or a 10 year old can of chicken soup?

I was going to say Whey Protein powder should be one of the best protein sources that will ideally last indefinitely. I have a 5# tub of Optimum Nutrition Cookies & Cream 100% whey protein with an expiration date of 2005. It was god awful tasting (sort of like a sweeter version of vomit) back when I bought it which is probably the reason I still have it. Anyways I just tried it recently and it doesn’t taste any worse than it did 10 years ago but it still tastes like vomit for 20 grams of protein per serving, so eat for nutrition not taste.

Au contraire. They are invaluable in soups and stews.

And they just happen to be very distasteful to the little bugaboos that you find in rice and grains.

Of course, O2 absorbers will do the trick and deprive them of oxygen but I believe in layered defensive protocols. And bay leaves are cheap.

Irradiated milk is common in most places except here, where we have a strong dairy lobby. I don’t recall if I ever tasted it though.

No Gordon Foods here but if we see one when traveling this summer, I’ll check into it.

Good advice, we haven’t moved into mylar quite yet. We got the FoodSaver for freezer use primarily and have only used that so far. But you’re correct about mylar for long term.

I’ll be checking our stuff, if we start getting leaks....and probably before we start getting leaks..I’ll get into mylar.

I use the FoodSaver to vac seal the Mylar bags. Use a straw to extend the Accessory hose, seal the bag most of the way then insert straw into small opening that is left and vacuum it. Press stop at the appropriate time and hold down with a finger and seal the bag the rest of the way with your clothes iron.

It works like a charm.
