There have been many misconceptions swirling around down south about Canada. While lack of knowledge about America’s closest neighbor and ally is certainly not uncommon, current issues such as the Keystone XL pipeline have brought many to the surface.
In an effort to better educate our American cousins, here’s a quick primer on all things Canada.

Just to be clear, that was not a ding on Canadians, but on draft-dodgers. I have great Canadian relatives who feel a bit pressed by their politics as well.
I have been to Canada more than a dozen times in the last 20 years (only one of those to Ontario) and the only people who have been unpleasant were border agents when I drove across, and not all of them. I have encountered snooty remarks and political comments that I found offensive—but some of the most offensive were made by other Americans who happened to be up there.
Jealousy. Pure and simple.
Whenever I go to Ontario which is at least once a year, the Canadians are nice and helpdful and speak fondly of the US...
Of course I do hang around other descendants of Loyalists so since their ancestors were born here maybe that makes a difference...
I will say that the Canadian border guards are becoming increasingly nasty...

The main complaint Ive heard over the years is that they can no longer go across the bridge to eat lunch in Buffalo from their work for someones birthday etc since 9/11...
Having to stop and and wait in lines to show ID and now passports takes time away from their 1 hour to get there and eat and come back...
...have been for years. For years, I made two or more border crossings a week at 5 or 6 different locations. I usually hauled softwood lumber south, and then "whatever" back into Canada. During that time, I never, ever had a problem at U.S. Customs. Even if there was a mistake on my paperwork, I was politely told about it and helpfully directed to where I could get it fixed. But I just dreaded heading back into Canada. I don't know what it is, but Canada Customs people are the snarliest, surliest, most inconsiderate bunch I've ever had to deal with. Don't get me wrong, I was always happy to be heading home, but first I had to go through that ordeal.
Canada should be considered our worst enemy. We have fought six wars with Canada—more than we have with any other country. However, in four of the wars, we were English and Canada was French, and in the other two, Canada was British and we were independent.
These are the wars: the War of the League of Augsburg (1689-1697), the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714), the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748), the Third Silesian War (1754-1763), the War of the American Revolution (1775-1783), and the War of 1812 (1812-1815).
I had a similar experience during my first (and so far, only) trip to Vancouver.
The US company I work for bought a Canadian company, and being one of the "network guys," I was sent up there to get their network integrated with ours. At the airport in Vancouver, the Canadian border agent asked why I was in Canada, and I said for business. So he started asking a bunch of questions about the company I worked for (happy to answer them) and the Canadian company we just bought (not a damned clue). Then he started getting pissy and asked why they sent me if I didn't know anything about the company we bought. My answer was that I didn't need to know anything about it, just to get their network integrated into ours. So next he asked me why my company sent me? Doesn't Canada have anyone that could do what needed to be done? I just looked him in the eye and said, "I guess not!" Finally he asked me if I was going to have to come back again, and I answered, "I hope not!"

When I was returning from the phililippines, they harassed the heck out of me at the Vancouver airport, even though I was a soldier for 10 years with 3 tours. I was a white boy coming home and I got detained and searched for a long time, while my parents were impatiently waiting for me so I could spend 45 mins with them in between my connection flight. They embarrass me, and those are not Canadians. They are jackbooted thugs like anywhere else in the world and in history. Power mongering idiots.
