Dr. Ben Carson: Your right to own a semiautomatic should depend on where you live
Hot Air ^ | March 4, 2013 | Allahpundit

Via the Right Scoop and Mediaite, a point of divergence from conservative orthodoxy by CPAC’s newest scheduled speaker. The urban/rural distinction was actually a key part of Breyer’s dissent in the Heller case five years ago that established an individual right to bear arms under the Second Amendment:

[H]andguns are not only popular tools for crime, but popular objects of it as well: the FBI received on average over 274,000 reports of stolen guns for each year between 1985 and 1994, and almost 60% of stolen guns are handguns… Department of Justice studies have concluded that stolen handguns in particular are an important source of weapons for both adult and juvenile offenders. Ibid.

Statistics further suggest that urban areas, such as the District, have different experiences with gun-related death, injury, and crime, than do less densely populated rural areas. A disproportionate amount of violent and property crimes occur in urban areas, and urban criminals are more likely than other offenders to use a firearm during the commission of a violent crime… Homicide appears to be a much greater issue in urban areas; from 1985 to 1993, for example, “half of all homicides occurred in 63 cities with 16% of the nation’s population.”… One study concluded that although the overall rate of gun death between 1989 and 1999 was roughly the same in urban than rural areas, the urban homicide rate was three times as high; even after adjusting for other variables, it was still twice as high… And a study of firearm injuries to children and adolescents in Pennsylvania between 1987 and 2000 showed an injury rate in urban counties 10 times higher than in nonurban counties…

Finally, the linkage of handguns to firearms deaths and injuries appears to be much stronger in urban than in rural areas...

So you’re telling Dr. Carlson to crawl back into his hole based on a HotAir article?

I have no problem with Dr. Carlson because I wasn’t anointing him the 2016 Candidate. I merely recognized that he made a very articulate argument against Obama’s policies in the Great One’s presence.

I’m not willing to demonize every conservative because may not match my viewpoint on every issue. I just wouldn’t vote them.

This is a little OT, but does anyone else notice Bam’s sly move to flip the bird at Carson’s bird joke? It happens right at 4:50ish.

Your right to own a semiautomatic should depend on where you live

Well, of course, because didn't give rights to people who live in predominantly black neighborhoods of Chicago. Right?

Dr. Carson already kicked conservatives to the curb this weekend as he denied SoCon issues should take precedence over fiscal issues. So these views on the 2nd should not be too surprising.

I agree that he should not be demonized. He is a very articulate voice for many values I share. However, in this instance he is also very wrong.

I also applaud Glenn Beck for letting Dr. Carson express his views in his own terms.

Okay, should we throw out the baby with the bathwater? I think if we pulled Dr. Carson aside and said, “Your other views are great. The way you handled the President at the National Prayer Breakfast was awesome. Now I realize you have never campaigned before, but the second amendment is a non-negotiable item”. Personally, I in no way agree with his position on guns. However I agree with a lot of the other things he says. Lets not send him to the gallows yet...

I knew he was too good to be true.

Dr. Carson is just like the others (Christie and Brown come immediately to mind) that certain Freepers are so anxious to support in the beginning, without knowing a lot about them. Then they find out more and are disappointed.

Agreed. I was disgusted at Rand Paul’s vote for Hagel, but I won’t hang him for that alone. These are articulate people with good ideas. What we should do is engage them, and bring them around to our side on these issues. Come on, conservatives. If you can’t win over people who are already mostly conservative, what chance do you have of winning over most of America? I could change Carson’s mind about this in twenty minutes tops.

That’s exactly my point. Dr. Carson made Obama look foolish, and using scripture as his basis.

I completely disagree with him about the 2nd Amendment. However, I refuse to cast him aside based on these statements.

I didn’t always have strong beliefs on the 2nd Amendment myself. However, when I started studying the Con-Law, I became an ardent opponent of any form of gun control.

Let’s give him some time before we castigate him.

I’m reading his book. He is way better than anyone else on the horizon. I doubt I will ever find anyone I agree with 100% on every issue. I love Allen West but didn’t agree with him on several things. Dr. Carson is still an amazing man and an amazing American.

Coalition politics can be a rough game. I'd never say we should overlook the gross stupidities of the Fiscal Cons by any means, but as long as they stay in their realm, and out of the broader more numerous Traditionalist issues (guns, birth, death, life, freedom, religion, etc.) they're better off with us than over there with the Democrats or on the fringe.

Romney made a really serious error by proposing that he was good enough to be President but he couldn't keep his mouth shut about putting gays in charge of the Boy Scouts, and gay marriage, and several other bits of clap trap and nonsense.

We should never put someone like that at the top of our candidates' lists again ~ that was beyond gross stupidity ~ it was terminal ~ and took down 12 Senate candidates with it!

"Dr. Ben Carson: Your right to own a semiautomatic should depend on where you live"

He's right. If you live within the borders of the USA and are a citizen you are allowed to own a semiautomatic weapon in fact you should own many of them. Well except me of course. I am a pacifist and don't own any guns.

I think a lot of people are looking for a savior from this mess on earth we are facing. None of us as individuals will ever find a person to elect that thinks exactly as we do. We have to save ourselves by electing people that believe that we have the liberty to think as individuals.
