Reputed Gay Bathhouses Remain Open In NYC

In the name of public health Nanny Bloomberg in New York City won't let his subjects gulp down a 16-ounce soda or light up a cigarette at a bar but as the HIV epidemic continues unabated it's apparently still okay to cruise for anonymous sex among the maze-like corriders of the East and West Side Clubs where gay men can rent claustrophobic cubicles for their presumed hookups.

A new study released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention concludes that "one in five gay men in the United States has HIV, and almost half of those who carry the virus are unaware that they are infected" as reported by Darryl Fears for The Washington Post.

And yet so-called gay bathhouses in New York City apparently remain open.

Dr. Demetre C. Daskalakis, a professor at New York University’s School of Medicine, "has been conducting HIV research in two Manhattan bathhouses—the East Side Club and the West Side Club—since 2006" as reported by a Jan 22. 2008 article ("Researchers Support NYC Bathhouse Regulation") for POZ Magazine: "so far, he has tested about 1,000 MSMs [men who have sex with men] for HIV and other STDs and has referred those in need of health care to Bellevue Hospital, which is funding his studies." A July 2, 2009 article ("HIV Testing in NYC Bathhouses") by Kristina Fiore for MedPage Today states:

"As the number of HIV cases in the U.S. soars -- especially among gay and black men, and particularly in New York City -- one physician is going where few have gone before in terms of prevention efforts: straight to the late-night gay scene. Dr. Demetre Daskalakis runs the first-ever HIV testing venue at a New York bathhouse in Chelsea. * * * Daskalakis can find no better place to do his work. Today, some men come to the club just for the free test, not the sex. That, Daskalakis says, makes keeping the clinic door open into the wee hours of a Manhattan weekend morning worth it."

The preliminary results from Dr. Daskalakis's research are not encouraging: "HIV positive MSM attending bathhouses represent an important group to target for HIV education and prevention since many continue to engage in high-risk sexual activities."

Apparently Mayor Bloomberg doesn't care if his gay constituents get HIV as long as they aren't fat or smell like an ashtray.

If this were a house with women in it instead of men they would call it a whore house and close it down.

Well: Maybe they wouldn’t in New York , but in most places they would.

Could be worse ... they could be sipping a 32 oz. sugary drink, puffing a cigarette and doing it at the same time!! Maybe Bloomberg could publicize that queer sex is much healthier in NYC and draw in some of those unhealthy living queers from SF.

Smoking banned everywhere in NYC. Sipping large drinks banned everywhere in NYC. Gay sex allowed everywhere.

If you are a man in NYC and you have something long and round in your mouth, there better be a body attached to it.

They make it still look like people are dying in the streets of AIDS but the death toll from 2009 was approximately 17,000. I don’t wish that on anyone but it is preventable.

Yet cancer deaths for 2012 are expected to be: 577,190.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22237781
That’s an enormous difference.

I would say we spend too much on HIV/AIDS when we should put the money in cancer research, I could care less what Oprah thinks.

Traffic fatalities in 2011 were approximately, 32,000. Worse than AIDS as well.

When the AIDS pandemic first got underway, I’ll never forget the “gay” community protesting vehemently these places should stay open even though they were the primary cause for the disease’s spread. Stunning...
Also, don’t forget Gov of PA, McGreevey (sp) coming out of the closet by telling of his anonymous hook ups in the bath rooms of rest stops on the Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Pkwy. Not a peep on that...
We have sunk SO low.....

Noooo, this is at odds with Planned Parenthood who tells minors and young adults with HIV-AIDS to feel free to spread it to as many partners as they like without feeling pressured to even tell the partners they have a disease.

Bathhouses are still open and visited routinely by the bathhouse boys at the New York Times.

The despot also promotes bicycling which kills more and more people every year, probably the most well known being the sister of Alan Dershowitz who was crushed by a UPS truck. Don’t drink soda (he also issued a edict this week prohibiting 2 liters sodas with pizzas deliveries) but telling people and incredibly kids it’s cool to ride bikes around speeding multi-ton trucks, cars, taxis is OK. The gay bathhouses don’t surprise me because I tend to believe the mincing despot is a closet case. NYC is a despotic state, and if people think it can’t happen in the USA may I introduce them to the city of New York. Guns, smoking, soda is the least of what he bans. He also bans food donated to the homeless and privacy in your own home, oh and small businesses. If you want to start one forget it unless you want to work for nothing.

If you’re going to the bathhouse, Don’t forget to take your meth, Viagra, poppers, booze, weed, blow, and whatever else floats your boat... good times are sure to be had!

Tax funded Planned Parenthood thinks kids and young adults should spread HIV-AIDS if they have it and not feel the need to tell their “partners”. They pass these pamphlets out to your children.

I think this says all we need to know about them.

“If this were a house with women in it instead of men they would call it a whore house and close it down.”

The difference is most men don’t charge for it. Yes, there are gay prostitutes but very few of them demand the fees that top women do.

Since there’s little cash changing hands, the police/government can’t get much side action out of “outlawing” this vice. There are no drug dealers or pimps with mountains of cash to skim.

So move along folks, nothing to see here...

Being Gay doesn’t cause AIDS or HIV infection. Having anonymous unprotected sex spreads the virus. Most libs will blame the government and straight heterosexuals, but never would they promote abstinence or monogamy.

Remember that the Stonewall riots were over the police closing of an illegally operated mob run speakeasy.

Corruption has sway in NYC, especially if you are a member of a protected class, such as homosexualists.

The gay "life-style" is all about sex - on demand, without conditions, and usually anonymous. That is the absolute sum and core of it, and there is nothing else. "Marriage," relationships, health, companionship are all absolutely secondary considerations
