Carrots, Eggs, Or Coffee?
Backwoods Survival Blog ^ | 2/25/13

A young woman went to her Grandmother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling.

Her Grandmother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans.

She let them sit and boil without saying a word. In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl.

Turning to her Granddaughter, she asked, "Tell me, what do you see?"

"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.

Can't stand coffee black, boiled eggs give me gas and carrots are definitely improved by boiling so I'd be one of the containers that takes all the heat and still holds everything together.

“Which will you be?”

I’ve been a problem solver all my life. I always think I can fix a problem - I just have to find the answer and I don’t quit until I solve it. I also drink 4 cups of coffee every morning, then I can solve any problem. What are carrots and eggs? Never heard of them - is that food you eat AFTER coffee? Put me down as a coffee.

But now the coffee bean has been used up. The next brew will be weak. Nice try, though. :)

Now suppose these pots were only half full of boiling water. Would the carrots, egg, or coffee bean view their situation as being in a pot half full of boiling water or in a pot half empty of boiling water?

That's only because I hadn't gotten pinged yet...

Each one of us - and that includes you, Kart old friend - has reacted to adversity in each way at one point in their lives. Each of us has been turned into mush, or hardened themselves, or worked a wonder to take advantage of the situation we're in.

The trick is, have we learned what the boiling water did to us in each scene? And will we recognize the boil when it arrives?
