Two lawmakers are waging a little-noticed campaign to abolish the Selective Service System, the independent federal agency that manages draft registration.

They say the millions of dollars the agency spends each year preparing for the possibility of a military draft is a waste of money.

Reps. Peter DeFazio, D-Ore., and Rep. Mike Coffman, R-Colo., say the Pentagon has no interest in returning to conscription due to the success of the all-volunteer force.

The Selective Service has a budget of $24 million and a full-time staff of 130...

There are high schools with larger budgets.

I was a draft board member during the Gulf War and we were getting ready to draft doctors and nurses but the tide turned our way.

It seems that America has decided that it will never again fight if an enemy is large enough, or powerful enough, we are in the process of surrendering to a future China or even of being incapable of fighting a couple of much smaller nations, if it means a dual front.

Do you realize how small a drop in the bucket $24 milion dollars is in the Federal budget? Or is your opposition to the draft itself?

I don’t see the purpose of registering for the draft anymore, I oppose every form of registration but the fact is the government doesn’t need such a database to round people up. I do oppose state slavery too

At a time when the volunteer military is strained to the breaking point.

I don't think that a lot of young voters realize that in a major war, that our current active duty military can be wiped out within a few weeks or months, in battles and death struggles that are killing thousands a day, everyday, week after week, until we are retreating, with wiped out divisions, decimated air forces, with mass surrenders.

You may very well learn that losing a real war, a major war of conquest, means the end of the United States, and true submission to foreign rulers.

History isn’t over.

If our $24 million is going to buy us a glorified mailing list of footloose twenty-something guys who we could not likely find in a timely manner if we had to...then yes, it’s a waste of money. Better to redirect it into some other form of military preparedness.

One dime spent on preparing for the draft is too much if the country has absolutely no political will actually to hold one. And frankly I don’t see that it does. Or what might cause it to have that will.

Three plus decades on I still believe Reagan was right on this one.

If it ever gets to the point that the all volunteer conventional forces lose ground then canned sunshine will start flying.

There is no need for a draft. It doesn't belong in a "free" society.

If the United States has to fight a nuclear war against China and/or Russia, then we lose and the US is finished.

Your belief that our small, weak military, which is inadequate to fight a major war, or multiple fronts, is as far as you are willing to go before surrendering, is a sign that America is indeed over.

I remember registering right after I turned 18. Six weeks later I was in the military...my parents forwarded my mail, and one of the first things I got was a nastygram saying I hadn’t registered.

I was busy with...um..my first few weeks in the military. So, I threw it away.

One day its going to bite me...I won’t be eligible for something because I’m allegedly a draft dodger.

The problem is actually less Selective Service than providing the government with another data source for their ever growing databases of citizen information.

Once you achieve a critical threshold of information about people from numerous sources, true and false, you begin to be able to “data mine” with advanced software, to discover information not in your records.

The government is not particularly ethical in how it obtains data, either.

In 1983, the Selective Service purchased Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor chain’s “Birthday Club” data and mailed warnings to young men to register for the draft before their 18th birthday. Farrell’s blamed the situation on an unauthorized sale by a list broker, and the government announced they would stop using the list.

Trust us.

Right now, every scrap of data the government can get is fed into enormous and powerful data mining computer centers, where most of it will sit, inert. But if you ever attract the attention of government, say by refusing to turn in your guns on demand, they will know far more about you than you suspect.

Women must be forced to register for the draft! If you can vote, then you can also have the privilege of getting shot in the head. And, in the spirit of Affirmative Action, women should immediately be drafted until they form 60% of the Infantry. There will be no deferments for pregnancy, children or education! If Uncle Sam wanted you to have a child, he would have issued you one. And education? All they’ll need to know is the max effective range of weapons. Ladies, if you want to keep voting for our glorious leader, then live with the consequences of his policies.

“Britney, your hair looks fabulous!”

POW!

“Ohhhhh....I don’t think any hairdresser can cover half your head missing.”
