I don’t think someone who can afford cigarettes, booze and a drug habit should be getting food stamps.

Agree!

If you go the government route, you will eventually starve.

I made about 12,000 dollars last year. I have one dependent in college. I pay my rent, eat fairly well. My bills are paid for the most part...I don’t own a car because I cannot afford one. I don’t live outside my means. I have a small apartment that is warm and dry. My soon to be ex husband lives on 50,000+ a year with his girlfriend (she works as well) Divorce sucks...but I will not go the EBT way so long as I can eat and stay warm. I am considered poor in this country...but if I can have something to eat and keep warm, I am a lot richer than most people on the planet...for that I am grateful.

The government is softening them up before they go to the big plantation.

Several months ago we were in line behind a well-dressed (white) woman at the local Wal-Mart who was using an EBT card, but who wasn’t familiar with how to use it. The checker patiently guided her through the process, and after the customer had gone we commented on how we didn’t expect to see well-dressed person using an EBT card. The clerk told us that he had a customer earlier using an EBT card who only wanted a bag of ice, a couple of candy bars for her kids and $100 back in cash. We asked the clerk if she could do that, and she said that she had to do it, it was store policy. She said that all the time she was ringing the customer up, the customer was bragging to her friend about her new Mercedes.

I’d be willing to add vegetables and canned tuna to the list, but I agree.

I worked as a cashier while in college. I could spot the EBT users a mile away, they were the ones whose carts were full of junk and whose kids were out of control.

Only once did I see an exception. A woman came through my line with healthy foods that were all on sale, things like fresh carrots and flour. She had two kids with her, but they were well-behaved and stayed close to her. It astonished me when she pulled out her EBT card, and she looked so ashamed of it that I did everything I could to make it painless for her.

I never saw her again, but I often pray for her.

I was recently told without shame about a woman in someone’s family who was on assistance and has a 40” and 70” tv in her home.

No.

I am not generally in favor of government food programs as a matter of principle.

If we do have them, they should be vouchers for low cost basics like carrots, eggs, canned milk.

Lest any lurkers out there think that this is rich Persevero saying “let the poor starve,” I have been qualified for food stamps most of my adult life buy have not taken them, with the exception of some WIC vouchers.

Not in NY. I have a friend on food stamps, I’ve written about her before. She lives in one room with no cooking facilities. She cannot even make herself a cup of coffee. In NY you cannot buy any hot food with good stamps.

If it were just them going to the “Big Plantation”, I wouldn’t care. They are going to drag you and me along with them. Granted, that is only if we let them, but I fear we are going to have to end up in something more invasive.

90% of the freeloading deadbeats getting government assistance are scamming the system.

I mean from the grocery store. We couldn’t go to Burger King, but we could buy lobster, I think. We never tried.

When I go to check out at a grocery store, I can’t see a card someone else is using and I don’t care - it is none of my business. I don’t know their personal situation, I know nothing about them and shouldn’t.

I won’t be the food police, I won’t condemn anyone for what they buy or don’t buy as that’s what liberals do.

think this is bad?

I just learned that the fedgov collects all the homeless types from northern (liberal) states and transports them to warmer climates. in many cases, to Hawaii... where they live on the beach in tent cities and receive weekly welfare checks... for life

that’s right... you’re working your ass off and giving 60-75% of it to the fedgov... who turns around and puts 65% of that received into these entitlement programs

think about that next time you’re thinking of taking a vacation but have to do a ‘stay-vaction’ instead
