America's Disabled Recovery: 28,705,000 on Disability
Confounded Interest ^ | 01/04/2012 | Anthony B. Sanders

Posted on 01/04/2013 4:56:34 PM PST by whitedog57

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released their monthly jobs report. Now for the BLS Boogie. Nonfarm payrolls rose by 155,000 workers last month following a revised 161,000 advance in November that was greater than initially estimated.

The unemployment rate printed at 7.8% which is up from 7.7% in November but the same as the UPWARDLY REVISED print of 7.8%. U6 partial unemployment printed at 14.4%.

Labor force participation remained at 63.6%.

And the civilian employment to population ratio fell to 58.6, still stuck are 1983 levels. That’s a lot of people for the 58.6% to support!

The number of civilians that are disabled fell to 28,705,000. That is almost 10% of the population.

Of course, these are disappointing numbers for a December. And disappointing for the housing recovery in terms of owner-occupied housing. Multifamily housing has been the big winner recently. Improvement in employment would help the owner-occupied housing market greatly.

The Dollar Swaps curve has risen 40 basis points over the last month.

Same for the Treasury actives curve, but only a 35 basis point rise in the long end.

Let’s see if The Fed sticks by it's guns about no more money printing. But with this projected trajectory of Federal spending, its likely that Big Ben will be called to the rescue.

“28.7 million Americans on disability.”

Bullshat, bullshat, bullshat.

Use the 1992 Social Security definition of disabled and see what happens to the problem!!!

When clintoon (the bent one) supposedly ‘ended welfare’ what he actually did was split it up over eighty (80) agencies. No agency took as bad as Social Security. The definition of ‘disabled’ was loosened up to include almost anything.

We are still paying for the eight years of that miserable fool, and probably will until every last thing he did during the eight years he infested the White House is undone.

I had two chance opportunities to observe two “disabled” people recently.

Tall, fit, young men. Articulate, ambulatory and decently dressed in casual clothes and nice new sneakers. But they were explaining to someone how they were just approved for disability.

Why do I bother working? Oh, right, to pay for extended vacations for those who won’t.

I have personal knowledge of this corruption that is "disability"...and as someone with a relative with ALS, I know what a disability is...

the day my sil got approved for her fat disability, she never used her cane again....IT WORKED!

ever notice how many of the casino and restaurant parking spaces for the "disabled" always fill up fast with seemingly ambulatory people....

oh yeah I know...just because one doesn't LOOK disabled it doesn't mean they aren't disabled?....or say they say....

but maybe if one doesn't LOOK disabled...like with a wheelchair or seeing eye dog or crutches etc ....then maybe they shouldn't be getting fat disability checks....

Don’t feel bad. I just spent 2 1/2 years and 2 denials waiting for a court date for a lifetime documented issue involving lotsa surgery and steroids. I was told specifically to my face and off the record of course I was the wrong color some time ago.

Once I got a court date, the guy that went into the room before me was as you describe. Fortunately he left fast and visibly pissed.

My case resulted in both the judge and govt rep/expert naysayer (basically a govt rep there to deny you) agreeing that I never should have been denied. But they system was ‘under a heavy burden’ at the moment.

I have a genuine issue and to be honest, it embarrasses me to admit it. BECAUSE so many scam the system. And people like me get lumped in with them in the public eye.

But I understand why.

Oh...and it will be 7 months before they get to processing me.

Let’s see, if I hate to get up and go to work every morning, in fact if I really, really hate to get up and go to work every morning, in fact, if work becomes a ‘dreaded object’, I wonder if this is what I have:

12.06 Anxiety-related disorders: In these disorders anxiety is either the predominant disturbance or it is experienced if the individual attempts to master symptoms; for example, confronting the dreaded object or situation in a phobic disorder or resisting the obsessions or compulsions in obsessive compulsive disorders.

The required level of severity for these disorders is met when the requirements in both A and B are satisfied, or when the requirements in both A and C are satisfied.

A. Medically documented findings of at least one of the following:

1. Generalized persistent anxiety accompanied by three out of four of the following signs or symptoms:

a. Motor tension; or

b. Autonomic hyperactivity; or

c. Apprehensive expectation; or

d. Vigilance and scanning; or

2. A persistent irrational fear of a specific object, activity, or situation which results in a compelling desire to avoid the dreaded object, activity, or situation; or

3. Recurrent severe panic attacks manifested by a sudden unpredictable onset of intense apprehension, fear, terror and sense of impending doom occurring on the average of at least once a week; or

4. Recurrent obsessions or compulsions which are a source of marked distress; or

5. Recurrent and intrusive recollections of a traumatic experience, which are a source of marked distress;

AND

B. Resulting in at least two of the following:

1. Marked restriction of activities of daily living; or

2. Marked difficulties in maintaining social functioning; or

3. Marked difficulties in maintaining concentration, persistence, or pace; or

4. Repeated episodes of decompensation, each of extended duration.

OR

C. Resulting in complete inability to function independently outside the area of one’s home.

Do you have any of these? Can you fake any of these?

Ding, ding, ding.

We have a check for you.

Even those declared legally disabled under current law can contribute and work.

That said, the law gives them an out and why shouldn't they take it.

This is a problem created by the government...not by those who simply take advantage of it.

Change the law...put them to work. Work is what satisfies...not idleness...not this disability crap.

I have been retired many times. Retirement sucks.

Find some work and go at it...life is work!

You shouldn't be lumped in with the scammers. I know some folks who are like you, legitimately disabled, and I want help sent in that direction. That's what a decent society does. Of course, a decent society also puts safeguards in place to prevent fraud.

Assuming we still have a country by then, there is a very real chance I might have to look at disability some day (health issues). I am working very, very hard to prevent that from happening, but the thing about life is that the best laid plans...

What really get me though is that even the people administrating the system know what’s going on. But it goes right to the top. And we KNOW who and what that is.

All I know is that i worked every bit that I could and paid into the system. For many years. But I am not thrilled with being even an unwilling leech on the system.

But there’s not a damn thing I can do about it. Doctors are not miracle workers.

“Disability” has become the new Welfare.

Use to be - if someone claimed disability, it was almost a shameful thing (like Welfare and food stamps once were). Then people began catching on —— and now our government is throwing more money at people not to work.

A dear friend had major heart issues that caused him to have to give up his farm (medical bills plus he could not do the work any more - literally). He filed for disability and was denied - it took paying a lawyer to file appeals to finally get approved... unfortunately, the approval came about the time he passed away from the rapid and sudden onset of lymphoma.

And all of this - while I have met MANY people who are on disability who are far less disabled than I am. My disability... I am obese. I have no diagnosed health conditions that would prevent me from doing my work. If I were in need of doing a very physical job, then I would struggle a bit...

Yet it seems not a day goes by that I don’t meet yet another person (or multiple people) who are drawing unemployment who engage in physical activities that I am unable to do. Who have hobbies that involve everything from hiking, to canoeing and horseback riding - who seem to have plenty of money to do whatever they want, including vacations all over... all at taxpayer expense. People who’s disability is their back (likely one of the more popular now) - yet can out lift me.

Another growing “disability” is related to social awkwardness and/or anxiety. Yes - if you are an anxious person, you too can stay home and draw a check!

“Disability” has just developed into yet another “taker” class of Democrat voters that will forever prevent the US from being able to pay its bills or to have anything resembling a balanced budget.

Our “Greece” moment is inevitable - the only question is “how long before it hits?”

Of course - I go back to another question - what part of the U.S. Constitution says or mandates that the Government is required to pay people who “can’t” work? Is it right next to the article that says the Federal Government is responsible for paying for disaster recovery?

SSDI was a scam from the beginning. The scam involved many *very* well paid gov’t bureaucrats and many *very* well paid “disability” lawyers. My 20 years of experience in heath care suggests to me that half of those on disability are fakes.

RoosterRedux said: "Retirement sucks. "

I've been retired for ten years now. I remember taking an online quiz prior to retiring to measure my suitability for retirement. I scored VERY, VERY high on the quiz.

There hasn't been a single day, hour, minute, or second that I have wished I was back at work. I have dozens of things I like to do and develop several more each year. There just aren't enough hours in the day.

So, what is it about retirement that "sucks"?
