Brown Pride (Cain Velasquez and the issue of identity)
American Rattlesnake ^ | December 30, 2012 | Gerard Perry

We don’t often cover the sporting news at American Rattlesnake, but after Cain Velasquez’s decisive victory over mixed martial arts rival Junior Dos Santos yesterday I thought it appropriate to revisit a post from last year where we examined the identity politics behind these fighters’ first matchup.

Although MMA pioneer and uber-promoter Dana White would like us to believe that the ’Brown Pride’ tattoo emblazoned upon this fighter’s chest is nothing more than an innocuous expression of ethnic pride-akin to the collective sense of accomplishment felt by those in Little Italy or Chinatown when a native son succeeds on the national stage-you have to wonder if this is truly the case. After all, this tattoo doesn’t express “Mexican-American Pride,” or even “Mexican Pride,” but is instead an explicitly racial affirmation.

Frankly, I find ethnic pride of any kind (country of origin or racial or religious),un-American. Although my roots are European, they arrived between 90 and 150 years ago, so as much as European history remains fascinating, I don’t identify with them now, nor do they consider me one of them. I’m American, period. E Pluribus Unum, “From Many, One.”

The diversity BS, the class war BS, the racial BS, all designed to destroy this country, tear it apart, and make it obamaland, or the soviet union, take your pick, not much difference from I can see. A tragedy in the making continues....

While I understand your reasoning. That way of thinking is not the future. The future is all about Tribe/Race. Nationality means nothing in multicultural societies.

I’m afraid you’re correct, and the future of the U.S. will not be bright. In my lifetime I’ve seen the changes that I didn’t think ever possible, and they aren’t good and continue to slide. I fear for my children and future grandchildren as to what beholds them. Faith is the only thing that keeps the picture relatively bright, thru any darkness.

So... a fighter with “White Pride” would be okay, too?

The whole “proud of my ancestors’ race and/or skin color” thing is stupid. Nobody had any control over what race they were born into so it can’t be a source of ligitimate pride. Pride should be a result of what is earned, not of what a person had no control over.

A question... are you equating a neo-nazi wearing “White Pride” tattoo to a chicano wearing “Brown Pride” tattoo?

“What’s the difference?”

Well, the biggest difference is that the neo-nazi tattoos have considerably more racial hatred than the mexican tattoos. Of course you did not know that. /sarcasm

Was the “White Pride” tattoo in question actually worn by a neo-nazi or are you providing the Nazi designation yourself? I’ll admit I don’t know much about the MMA controversy.

Again, the future is all about Tribe & Race. White people better get it together and yes, that means racial pride/solidarity, whatever you wanna call it, soon or we are South Africa.

He was born in the U.S. but waves the Mexican flag at his fights. This and the “Brown Pride” tattoo has always made me dislike him.

I was hoping JDS would knock him out, like he did in their first fight, unfortunately Cain won. Hopefully, Cain will be put to sleep by an Alistair Overeem knee in the near future.

Cain Velasquez’s “Brown Pride” reminds me of so many Americans who carry on about being Irish...or Polish...or Jewish.

It is hard to explain to people unfamiliar with those whose parents came from Mexico, but in the Hispano heritage world, if your want some literary character to pay the part of a ‘schlub’, you make them Mexican.

A dear friend of mine, born in Mexico but a naturalized U.S. citizen, was disappointed to find that in Europe’s Spanish media, the part of the ‘schlub’ always spoke with a Mexican accent!

Most of Mexico’s population is now Mestizo - Indian and European. It wasn’t so long ago that Mestizos were shunned by the other two ethnic groups. Now they have political power as the majority or the population of Mexico, but the stigma and the sensitivity to it, still remain.

No, keeping it a generalized comparison for the purpose of pointing out the double-standard that many people seem to be okay with.

There’s no reason for anyone to have racial pride because a person’s racial make-up simply happens as a result of their parents’ actions, not as any accomplishment of their own.

“Was the “White Pride” tattoo in question actually worn by a neo-nazi or are you providing the Nazi designation yourself? I’ll admit I don’t know much about the MMA controversy.”

There was (still is?) a MMA fighter with “White Pride” tattoo who was a self declared Neo-Nazi.

Cain is nowhere close to that level... in fact, this “Brown Pride” is like “Italian Pride” or “Irish Pride”. Nobody gets up in arm about those.

See my post #18 about a neo-nazi MMA fighter with “White” tattoo.

“There’s no reason for anyone to have racial pride because a person’s racial make-up simply happens as a result of their parents’ actions, not as any accomplishment of their own.”

I completely agree that it is silly. And I think Cain’s tattoos are silly, as well. But comparing those to a neo-nazi wearing “White Pride” is disingenuous at best and apologist at worst.

I see both a Brown Pride and a White Pride tattoo the same, as ignorant, racist and tribal. No distinction. So does that sound “apologist”?
