$2 Billion to Detain Immigrants? Not a Good Move — Rev. Lauma Zusevics Writes at The Capital Times
Capital Times ^ | December 24, 2012 | LAUMA ZUSEVICS

In the wake of Election Day, “immigration reform” has been on the lips of our political leaders, Republicans and Democrats alike. Hearing such talk makes me wish those officials could share the experiences I’ve had, so that those reforms are based on reality rather than wishful thinking.

Whether your family arrived in America by disembarking before there was a country, or by dutifully waiting in line to immigrate, we can all agree that as Americans we have certain responsibilities. We have a moral obligation to refrain from treating illegal immigrants with undue harshness, and as a nation respected for its rule of law, we have a responsibility to provide detained immigrants with a baseline of access to services and legal counsel to ensure that people can extricate themselves from unjust accusations.

What first comes to mind, then, is a mother in tears who recently opened my eyes to how badly our broken immigration system treats illegal migrants, and how urgently that system needs reform.

I met her in a windowless chamber of St. Paul’s Ramsey County Adult Detention Center. We spoke in the company of a group of Lutheran clergy with whom I’d come to Minnesota to learn more about America’s immigrant detention centers

I wonder why the pastor did not disclose the nature for why this woman was detain in the first place. As relaxed as Obama has made our Immigration laws. The woman would did something to get the attention of ICE and she would of had to do something that is very serious for ICE to detain her.........how badly our broken immigration system treats illegal migrants.......... Right, our system is so bad the word is out, stay away from America.

What complete and utter horseshit. Rule of Law has been completely ignored, I know of no other sovereign country that give such pampered treatment and consideration for the criminals that invade it nor showers them with such public largess, and there is certainly no dirth of representation legal or otherwise for these criminals.

Oh what the heck, just turn them all into registered Democrat voters and be done with it!!

And while we are at it just make every crime be legal and think of the TRILLIONS that could be saved to pay for the public health care that is now a "RIGHT". /s

We have a moral obligation

This is nonsense - what moral obligation ? Who says we do ? The author ? I (and millions of others) say America has no moral obligation to foreigners.

Moral relativism. "Whatevery I make up in my head is a "moral law"." Garbage. It's based on nothing.

We have a moral obligation to refrain from treating illegal immigrants with undue harshness,

The use of the phrase "undue harshness" skews the argument. All that I ask is that illegal aliens be treated with "due harshness" and be returned to their homes as quickly and efficiently as possible. Just because you want to be here does not impose an obligation on the country to let you in, feed you, clothe you, house you and you children's children to the seventh generation.

We treat Illegals so bad that Obama gives to them his version of the dream act, social security cards are being issued, states are giving drivers licenses, the ones who will not are being sued to demand illegals have a human right to drive, work permits. States such as Calif made major changes in the guidance for agents is that it “restricts the use of detainers against individuals arrested for minor misdemeanor offenses such as traffic offenses and other petty crimes.”..Illegals have been free to protest by laying down in the streets, staging protests at federal buidlings demanding senators water down our immigration laws. Protesting at ICE wearing same t-shirts undocumented and unafraid.Illegals wear t-shirts-carry banners undocumented unafraid.Back in Aug illegals were in that bus that had banners on the side of bus undocumented and unafraid travling through different states to reach South Carolina Democratic Party to demand changes to our immigration laws. But we are being told how harsh and cruel we are to illegals in this country.Throw in free college, free medical, free transplants, etc, etc.

“There has to be a better way than to separate families and leave too many eyes reflecting hopelessness and pain.”

Oh, shut up you pathetic loser. Your heart is full of betrayal.

The Census Bureau estimates that 11 million illegal immigrants live in the USA.

According to the author, 34,000 are in jail.

That’s less than 0.3% of the illegal population.

Anyone care to guess the incarceration rate for LEGAL Americans?

More than 1.0% - THREE TIMES HIGHER!

As I recall, Justice Department counted 250,000 illegals incarcerated TEN YEARS AGO!

That 34,000 is probably just Los Angeles County!

To: moonshinner_09; All

I question the “Christianity” and “religious background” of anyone who thinks that an Illegal Alien has more rights and entitlements than an American Citizen or a LEGAL Immigrant

Every Illegal Alien breaks the law....every Illegal Alien takes something that does not belong to them....and takes something that belongs to someone rightfully here

I agree remove them immediately before they can have their anchor babies and become dependent on all the legal U.S taxpayers for their subsistence.

The preacher is a trained liar. In one paragraph, one sentence following the others he went from 'illegal immigrants" to "detained immigrants'.

You don't need to read any further when somebody does that.

The right to drive (License) = The right to vote in Arizona. 30 million newly minted RAT voters is this is not curtailed. Our Governor Brewer issued an EO stating NO drivers license (under existing state law) and the bleeding heart liberals came after her with a vengeance - how cruel she is, on and on and on. This is not the country I was born in or raised in, not any more. My uncle was a US Rep back in the day and he is turning in his grave.

This is the sort of mentally retarted drivel that passes for thoughtful analysis on the left re illegal immigration.
