As Oregon's jobs growth crawls, thousands await their shot at recovery

Hope for finding a job, for paying next month's rent and for keeping the lights on over for the holidays is fading for Brenda Wallis. She lost her job in 2008, at the dawn of a recession that eventually claimed 147,700 Oregon jobs.

She exhausted her unemployment benefits and has applied for cash assistance from the same state agency at which she once worked. And she's filled out hundreds of applications, landing six interviews but no offers.

As the gap in her work history grows, the bills get harder to pay. There's little left to hope for, says the Fairview mother of three, whose oldest celebrates her 17th birthday on Christmas...

Six interviews in four years? I could easily get her six interviews a week, and my skills are rusty.

If I were hiring I certainly would not hire someone who worked for the government.

And just out of curiousity Brenda Wallis, who did you vote for in the last election & the election before that. I bet 99 to 1, you voted for 0dumb0shit, the marxist-fascist-socialist boy wonder, who is bankupting & destroying our country. If so, and I realize that I am surmising this, but if you voted for 0dumb0, then I have no sympathy for your plight!

We would never hire a liberal either. There are subtle ways of finding out if the applicant is a Dummycrat.

No sympathy here. The far West keep voting Democratic time after time while expecting things to get better. Screw ‘um.

Worked for the government. Six interviews in four years.

What? Are there no job training programs? (paraphrasing Scrooge, there) That’s enough time for anybody to retool their skill set, move to a new field of endeavor, and pack up and MOVE your family to where the jobs are, for crying out loud.

She’s probably waiting for the ideal job to just land in her lap without striving for it.

She sounds unemployable to me.

Hate to sound harsh this Christmas season, but that’s cold hard reality. I’m 62...was laid off a year ago and was back to work in 8 weeks because of a strong personal network, fresh skills, a great work ethic, and an ability to get along with the team at work.

Nope. Can’t eat gay marriage or fill up your tank with wind power either. Elections have consequences.

Am I a bad Christian if I just don’t care? I mean, she’s not starving, she’s not begging for scraps by the side of the road, missing a leg. She presumably sleeps indoors, away from the rain. She has electricity. I do not consider her one of the “poor” that I’m called on to have compassion for.

I’ve been in situations where I didn’t know how or when I’d pay my rent or keep the lights on, or I didn’t know when I’d next be able to go to the grocery store. I’ve never considered myself “poor.”

You vote for more of President Food Stamp, you get more of President Food Stamp. We abort our babies in the womb, we sexualize young children, we refuse to let people protect their children, we teach them materialism and worship of the Earth and of Earthly things, in other words we are exactly the sort of society that God forsakes in His righteous anger. We deserve what we get.

We’re headed towards another massive recession any way, the likes of which the world has never seen, because the world has never seen waste and subsidized idleness on the scale of the modern welfare state countries. It’s not if, it’s when. When these systems collapse, a domino effect depression will be felt across the entire world.

Just out of curiosity, would any of you on this thread feel sympathy for this woman if she was an ardent conservative?

Where did I say I have no sympathy for her or anyone else? I merely noted, as a long-time career counselor and recruiter, that six interviews in four years means she isn't going about it the right way.

Of course you're right--she can't be going about this in the right way. You'd know, you're a professional in this. And I know you didn't say you had no sympathy for the woman. After all you've suffered, you must have a great deal of compassion in your heart, for suffering makes us understand the sufferings of others.

But it seems there are many Freepers who are filled with hostility toward anyone who is out of work for a long time, and they invariably blame the unemployed person. They seem very threatened by the idea that it's really, really tough out there in the job market if you aren't actually living near the Bakken.

I just had this argument with someone yesterday. Even though I'm currently employed (sort of: two part-time jobs and a home business), several Freepers have accused me of all sorts of awfulness because I went through a long period of unemployment. Bad news: things are so terrible in the job market now that even good, smart, determined people may not be able to get jobs, especially if they're older or have a typical mom resume.

I will say, here and now, that I will help any FReeper or their family until they find a decent job, no matter how long it takes. They only have to FReepmail me a resume and I will search out jobs in their area (or where they want to work) and send them in groups of four for them to apply.

"Ideally, she says, she would like to find something at the Department of Human Services, where she worked as a temp from 2006 to 2007."

She's 37 years old, and her last "job" was as a temp 5 years ago?

What did she do before that?

How did she pay her bills with such a job?

I'm trying to be sympathetic, but the last thing the world needs is more beaurocrats. And in 2007, the economy was pretty good.

She’s a poor example of the long-term unemployed. This has been a “man-cession” for the most part and lots of those were construction workers, warehouse, factory, call center, mortgage and other occupations that have gone bye-bye in this economy.

You are kind. I am going to take you up on that, because I’ve really improved my resume in the last year, and my boss can’t afford to pay me more than the pathetic amount she’s giving me now.

Still praying for you and the Missus!

What would the pay be if 44 million unemployed showed up next week?
