Nancy Lanza May Have Been a ‘Survivalist’ and a Prepper (Oh my goodness!)
Jezebel ^ | December 17, 2012 | Madeleine Davies

More details are emerging about the home life of Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter Adam Lanza, though it's always best to take these things with a big grain of salt. The Telegraph is now reporting that Nancy Lanza, Adam's mother and first victim on Friday, was actively stockpiling guns and supplies to prepare for an economic collapse. Says her sister-in-law Marsha Lanza:

"She prepared for the worst. Last time we visited her in person, we talked about prepping -– are you ready for what could happen down the line, when the economy collapses?"

Nancy Lanza, according to police, had five guns legally registered to her name, at least three of which were carried by Adam Lanza into the school.

At this point, it's easy and natural to sensationalize and speculate into the happenings of the Lanza household. Adam Lanza was, without a doubt, unstable and Nancy Lanza was, at best, struggling to handle it (a week before the shooting, she reportedly told friends that she was losing her son, saying "it was getting worse" and she was "having trouble reaching him"). If we deem them as doomsday preppers, it becomes a little easier to separate their reality from our own, to make us feel that we know what the danger signs are and to help to help comfort ourselves into thinking that knowing all this could protect our children and ourselves from a similarly horrible event in the future...

These episodes seem to bring out the craziness of the mental defectives in the media. If she was Amish, goth, a prepper or a collector of baseball cards, what does that have to do with what her son did?

Big whoop. So was my grandmother.

She canned all summer so she could feed the brood over winter. Had a shotgun and everything.

Yes. Everyone keeps saying that Zombies are not real. I am not so sure anymore. They keep showing themselves.

Kinda sounds like they are builing the narrative that preppers deserve to have their kids taken away from them.

Nancy Lanza has no one to defend for her now. This whole mess will be dumped on her. Just wait and see.

She was murdered. She killed no one.

Of course she will get some blame. She had a mentally ill son, with an anti-social behavior history and a personality disorder. She took him shooting and gave him access to multiple firearms. Hello

The first report of this were assumptions and fabrications.
Wrong person named... wrong age killed father, didn’t kill father, mother taught at school shot there, mother never taught school, mother home schooled shooter, pistols used.. rifle left in car, was buzzed in wasn’t buzzed in.

Thus far reported mother murdered in bed,,Forced entry into school rear window broken and used for entry. First reported but not mentioned in subsequent reports ,guns were stolen, rifle used was legal not an automatic prohibited by state law, Never mentioned despite rifle appearance not suited or allowed for most large game including deer because of small caliber 22.3 sized bullets.

Sombebody call George Noury Suggest the kid picked up on the Dec 21st 2012 Mayan thing and was thinking in his deranged mind he was saving the world...

Start calling tv network news vans HO trucks....

The shooter was an obvious nut job so he couldn’t be tied to listening to Rush or going to Tea Party rallies so the lame stream media had to fabricate some narrative to link the shooting to conservatives. I was surprised that the lame stream media didn’t immediately fabricate some phony direct tie between the shooter and conservatives like they did for the Gabby Giffords shooter. Some people are still buying that lie.

Let me first say that I am a staunch supporter of the second amendment. However, this argument: that her choices are totally irrelevant when it comes to her sons own actions is without merit. I raised a military brat. Guns were had a places in our household albeit not a prominent one. My baseball card collection was far more important. It was my first glance and economic and capitalism. I worked to support this hobby vigorously (paper route, snow shoveling, lawn mowing).

To ignore the fact that a middle aged woman in Connecticut, while within her Consitutional right, decided to amass this “collection” is born out of convenience. It falls far afield the self defense justification. Further troubling is the knowledge she possessed of her sons mental illness and anti social behavior. She took her rights too far and passed on her affinity for guns to someone ill equipped to discern responsible handling. That is without question.

We cannot expect these facts to be ignored by anti gun advocates and the medias predilection for exploiting such tradgedies to further an agenda. The facts are undeniable. Whether it is preppers, goth “lifestylers”, or even the Amish, they share some common denominators not least is an aversion to mainstream society ( in some ways understandable) and take this too far in some instances. Additionally, they are increasingly allowing themselves to be labeled by participating in these ridiculous reality TV shows. Amish Mafia...give me a break already! These representatives of alternative lifestyles are allowing themselves to be portrayed as extremist. Contrast with Survivorman etc.

While ia agree that people should be protected and that includes all of the Constitution and its amendments, it comes with personal responsibility. If you choose to alienate your self from society, then don’t be surprised with the resulting brouhaha.

Lastly, it is blessed are the cheese makers. And it is not to be taken literally, but refers to any manufacturer of dairy products!

Seriously, noob, no one has amassed the information necessary to make these assertions. The "facts" of this story are constantly changing. All we know is what the media tells us, and that story has been changing hourly since Friday morning. And it has become obvious that there is an agenda to be supported by the media.

Also,what is a "self-defense justification", exactly?

Self-defense justification: owning the number and types of guns deemed reasonably appropriate to safeguard against intrusion. These parameters are found often as it applies to laws. I agree that there has been a tremendous amount of misinformation by a lazy, agenda-driven media.

yes but they always blame the mother!! why isn’t anyone bitching about the father? where was he? oh yeah, thats right. he gets a pass because he bailed on his crazy son and got himself a new wife and family! why isn’t anyone screaming about him?! makes me so mad! The mom who stayed and tried to figure out her son and love her son and fix her son gets turned into the devil of the day.

so who gets to decide what is an appropriate number and type of weapons for self defense? last time I checked the 2nd amendment said “shall not be infringed”
