The following picture has been posted by the office of PM Netanyahu in his Facebook page. My question is: why is he lighting the shamash after the first Hanukkah candle is already lighted? I am not criticizing, I am a Christian who is trying to learn.

Thanks! That means that he is NOT going to light the second candle, like somebody suggested. BTW, wasn’t olive oil what was used in the menorah in the Temple?
Yes, it was olive oil that was used in the great Temples. I think either he messed up with the shamash candle or perhaps it had gone out and he was relighting it. You are supposed to light the shamash candle first and then the leftmost of the regular candles. You start out with the rightmost candle the first night, you add a candle to the left of that one the 2nd night, another candle to the left of the second candle the 3rd night, etc. Then you light the leftmost of whatever regular candles are in place first, the next one to the right next, etc. Hope that clears it up for ya!
Maybe they were both already lit and this is just a photo op picture.
