McDonald's to roll out new $1 items to spur traffic: Snack Size Fish McBites & Onion Cheddar Burger
Nation's Restaurant News ^ | November 27, 2012 | Mark Brandau

McDonald’s franchisees have indicated that they're willing to promote products for $1 — but no cheaper — as the brand makes its first moves toward a new value-heavy marketing strategy to turn around faltering sales.

In an email from Fred Huebner, chair of McDonald’s Operators National Advertising Fund, or OPNAD, obtained by Nation’s Restaurant News, the brand indicated that two “value plan energizers” to be put in place for late 2012 and early next year are Snack Size Fish McBites and the Grilled Onion Cheddar Burger, which will debut on the Dollar Menu with national ads beginning in late December.

However, local advertising co-operatives did not approve OPNAD’s plan to offer a 69-cent hamburger and an 89-cent cheeseburger, signaling that McDonald’s owner-operators in the United States have little desire to sell items for less than $1.

“All the co-ops have finished voting on advertising the two business energizers that OPNAD approved for a co-op vote to accelerate our business momentum in the fourth quarter and the start of 2013,” Huebner wrote in his email to McDonald’s owner-operators, corporate staff, and key national and local ad agencies. “I know this was a very fast turnaround, and I appreciate the extraordinary efforts that you all made to enable your co-ops to meet quickly and vote on these programs.”

Plans for the Grilled Onion Cheddar Burger, which were approved by the local co-ops in a prior vote, will continue apace for the late-December rollout...

Obamacare - they doubled the price of hash browns earlier this year, and my #2 meal went from four something to five something.

I have only had ONE McD’s burger in my life, and that was the last one I would ever put in my mouth. That was way back when they first opened. Ok, give them a try .........yuk.....I prefer to know what kind of meat I am eating.

Why would they carry an 89-cent cheeseburger? It doesn’t take much math skill to figure out that at $1 a McDouble is a better value.

McDonald’s is also moving to pre-packaged products that are microwaved.

Egg McMuffins now come to the store frozen. They go from the freezer to the microwave to the customer.

IMHO, McDonald’s problem for decades has been the quality of its food. Lowering its quality yet again is not going to pick up any customers.

On the other hand, Wendy’s is trying to improve the quality of their offerings in an effort to boost sales.

McDonald’s actually had pretty decent food in the ‘60s. But, McDonald’s destroyed its brand when it went with the “appeal to kids” advertising. They lowered the food standards and created an atmosphere that was uncomfortable for anyone over 12.

They never have been able to recapture the adult market, and I don’t think they ever will.

I have gone to McDonalds maybe half a dozen times over the last 2 years. The service has been awful, the play areas for my daughter have not been operational, the restaurants have been dirty and the food is bad. It is low on my list of fast food joints.

It's been a long time since I've eaten fast food. For lunch I just bring in leftovers from the prior dinner which I nuke in the work microwave, or make a sandwich with cold cuts.

Naturally I don’t eat at McDonalds unless it can’t be help.

But that Grilled Onion Cheddar Burger looks and sounds tasty.

Anyone try one yet?

Since I lost my gall bladder, I cannot eat any fast food. Grease goes through me like water through a fire hose. I have a 12-minute window from eating corned beef hash to really, really needing to be in the bathroom. Makes me healthier, I guess.

Bring back the Beefsteak Sandwich!

It was test marketed in Milwaukee, and probably other places as well. Served with steak sauce on a french roll. When I’d make one for myself, I’d add grilled onions.

Yeah.. They used my local McDonalds as one of their test markets, and I tried one about a month or so ago.

That onion burger was easily the most horrible tasting thing I ever got from any fast food place.

Usually I have to invent a recipe and do the cooking myself to get something to taste that vile.

I don’t know what they did to that poor onion, but it should be a crime. The sauce is yucky too.

Thank you. Leave it to Mickey D’s to screw up a classic burger like that.
