How in the world did we become a superpower?

They already made Sara Lee and Mrs. Bairds into BMBO, now Hostess too? Those pimps!! They’ll probably go after Little Debbie some day!

.....

The US has artificially high sugar prices, government barrier. I don’t think they use corn syrup in baked goods.

I think you should be asking, how do we continue to be a superpower, instead. Leave the blackboard-theory stuff to the eggheads.

Actually, now that you mention it . . . if Bimbo moves the production to Mexico, it will probably use real sugar. I look forward to it (not being a Hostess fan in the past).

How long will this thread go on without a Sandra Fluke/Bimbo reference? I give it less than 5 more posts.

In other words, this was all a big kabuki play to allow the owners to move the company to Mexico (by letting the brands get bought). American workers lose jobs and we get to blame them for their greed. Americans start getting even lower quality Twinkies. And a small group of people get to walk away with a huge bag of cash.

So then we can expect some Bimbo eruptions on our grocery store shelves.

Well, let’s hope Mexican snack cake makers are better than their friends in the candy business:

Hostess has posted a loss, primarily due to the Unions - but aggravated by various other costs. Increasing taxes, increasing costs in energy (fuel costs, heating, cooling and distribution related). The Union strikes were just the straw that broke the camel's back.

Bimbo, likely doesn't have the unions in a position to dictate the profits they make. This allows them to consume break companies (like Mrs. Bairds) and stock local grocery stores with a quality product, at a reasonable price.

If this goes through, I foresee no drop in either availability or quality of the Twinkie product. It will very likely be made at the same bakeries, on the same equipment, with the same ingredients, hauled on the same trucks and will be delivered to your store at the same price. Just now, the profits and business plans will be managed by Bimbo, rather than some union thugs.

I wouldn’t purchase a twinkie after this no matter who makes them. The same way I will NEVER own GM product the rest of my life.

The company has stressed in advertising that it’s pronounced “BEEM-bo”

http://throwgrammarfromthetrain.blogspot.com/2010/04/just-say-beembo.html

>>the sticky-note coupon on the front of this morning’s Boston Globe got my attention: “$1.00 Off 2 Bimbo Products,” it promised. It sounds like something Hugh Hefner might be hawking, but instead of a bunny, the artwork showed a fluffy white bear, chef-hatted and cheerful, about to attack a sandwich. And below was the pronunciation key: “Say ‘Beembo!’”
Say what? Well, the answer was easy enough to find. Bimbo Bakeries, a company founded in Mexico, is not only expanding in the US market but owns many old familiar brands...
And about the name: “The official version has it that the name Bimbo, coined in 1945 ... was chosen because the company thought it competed well with the existing Bambi and Dumbo brands in Mexico. In addition, the innocent, childlike name went well with the brand image they wanted to build.” The OED lists bimbo as equivalent to the Italian bambino, “child.” It has cites for bimbo as a contemptuous word for “fellow” from 1919 to 1947 (in P.G. Wodehouse); for “a woman; esp. a whore” from 1929 to 1952; and for an attractive but dumb young woman (”now the usual sense”) from 1927. So, “say Beembo” … will that tagline help us all suppress the snicker reflex? Well, apparently our friends in the Southwest and West have been getting acquainted with Bimbo for a while now.
