The adults at Hostess give a reality lesson to Obama’s union children

This is the end of Hostess Bakery Company. It was started in 1930 and died a few days after Barack Obama was reelected. The smiles have barely left the faces of his supporters, and now thousands of them across the country are being fired and laid-off.

“We deeply regret the necessity of today’s decision, but we do not have the financial resources to weather an extended nationwide strike.

Hostess Brands will move promptly to lay off most of its 18,500-member workforce and focus on selling its assets to the highest bidders.” With these 45 words the world has been turned upside down for “proud and determined” union members who were going to “show Hostess how things will be from now on.”

Instead they got a smack across the nose and a clear lesson about how an economy really works.

These 18,500 people have been led into a strike they never had a chance of winning. They foolishly believe Obamanomics works because their leaders told them so. Commies and union leaders lie.

The unions involved were thoroughly warned that a strike would mean the end of Hostess, but alas they didn’t care.

They had just reelected their president – so what could go wrong? Hostess would be forced to remain in business to provide them with jobs – wouldn’t they?

Because they are liberal Democrats these people know nothing about how wealth is created, and don’t really care. All they know is if you have wealth they will find a way to take it.

They are child-like in their understanding of wealth. They are like five year olds who don’t believe “mommy has no money” because they saw a ten dollar bill in her purse.

……these layoffs which come just in time for Thanksgiving….

Or William Shatner.

“Certainly their long term business plans showed trouble ahead, before the election, and layoffs would have happened regardless of the election results.”

Not really. The short term outcome of the election could have radically altered the long range results. Many companies were going to layoff until they heard Romney promise to cancel OmabaCare, reign in the EPA, regulations, change banking rules, etc., and get the economy going. So, companies had two plans: Obama and Romney. The Obama plan included layoffs.

most of the nails were put in my Bain-type idiots who were more concerned with short-term profits than maintaining the longterm health of a company that provided a product that millions of people enjoyed

Thanks for your sterling analysis, Mr. Axelrod.

Just for your information, the typical LBO portfolio company is purchased by "Bain-type idiots" for a holding period of seven to ten years - "short term profits" are the exact opposite of the LBO investing model.

“Well, let’s say this Twinkie represents the normal amount of socialism in the United States. According to this morning’s sample it would be a Twinkie…thirty-five feet long weighing approximately six-hundred pounds.”

I believe most, if not all, were hoping Romney would win and provide a small light of hope.

Now there is no hope....

They are not getting “laid off”. Their jobs are being “eliminated”. Big Diff.

A government that can make you buy insurance can make you take out a loan to cover the added overhead of a union contract and force you to sign the union deal Don’t beleive me - just ask john roberts.

I think it was 2004, which was first Bankruptcy, then hedge funds invested in Hostess. $50-$100 million. Plus loaned a huge amount of money to Hostess. I can hear vulture capitalism. Jan 2012 filed bankruptcy again and the unions have had to role back in wages and benefits. Bankruptcy court said yes Hostess can ask for a 8% role back with possible 3% raise next year. Teamsters took the deal Bakers said no

As I see it, these companies were hanging on by their fingernails, hoping for a POTUS who understood business. When Oblamer was declared the winner, these companies knew it was no use hanging on, and they threw in the towel!

A caller to yesterday’s Tom Sullivan Show claimed there are already buyers in line for the great Hostess line of product, and that Hostess route men who deliver the product need to keep relationships with their stores since the product will likely be rebooted under a different name. Conceivably a lay off may be dramatic but there would be a possibility that it could be short lived. Meanwhile, it’s a certainty that the media will flog the drama.

Very simple: the largest single cause of uncertainty in the business community right now is Obamacare, which Romney had vowed to repeal. Once Romney lost the election, businesses had to start implementing the layoff plans they had made just in case Obama won.

I recall when the International Harvester Corp union workers went on strike. This was in the early 70’s. Floor sweepers were making more money than the company could possibly afford and then the union wanted even more.

The strike went on and on, finally the company went out of business. Oh there is still an IH but they just sell other peoples stuff. Most of the strikers lost everything they had, their houses and many their marriages because of their stupidity.

Unions have gotten WAY too powerful. We did it to ourselves.

A 600 pound Twinkie is approximately the size of a city block.

One biga$$ Twinkie.

I know folks hoped Romney would appeal obamacare, but I don’t think he could have or that there is political will to do so. If there were, there would be protests to get it done. I think Romney could have done other things to help business out and that is perhaps what business was hoping for.

The brand and products have value and will be sold. The buyer will not be a union shop.

I feel sad for the Hostess company and all the people working there who weren’t for the strike, union or not, as there’s always a decent percentage of folks in the union that aren’t for what the leadership is doing.

I am not sad there are thousands and thousands fewer union jobs - at least, not with a union as stupid as this.

One small bright spot in this is that these layoff will weaken unions, and be cutting their money/political power to lobby for democrats.
