Russian Sub Skirts Coast
Washington Free Beacom ^ | 11/6/12 | Bill Gertz

A Russian nuclear-powered attack submarine cruised within 200 miles of the East Coast recently in the latest sign Russia is continuing to flex its naval and aerial power against the United States, defense officials said.

The submarine was identified by its NATO designation as a Russian Seirra-2 class submarine believed to be based with Russia’s Northern Fleet. It was the first time that class of Russian submarine had been detected near a U.S. coast, said officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of anti-submarine warfare efforts.

One defense official said the submarine was believed to have been conducting anti-submarine warfare efforts against U.S. ballistic and cruise missile submarines based at Kings Bay, Georgia.

We have been searching for this Sub for a couple days now. The resurgent Russian threat and Obama whispers to Medvedev to tell that nutcase PUTIN that he will have more flexibility after the election. This is serious threat to our national security and where is the media? No CBS,ABC,NBC,CNN, NYT, POST, etc nothing not a peep can't make Obama look bad right before election... This can't end soon enough.

I guess Obama will have more flexibility if he wins to allow the Russian navy to establish permanent ports in Virginia and New York City

Vote the Nut-In-Chief out of the White House tomorrow, and, if things stay calm enough until the Inaugural, this crap will stop.

Especially Obama's fleet of ships that go underwater.

Well if that don’t beat all??? Since when do we allow Russia to walk all over us, or in this case sail or seas within our limitations without challenge?

No doubt the Russians were hosting some Iranian officials onboard to show them just how much of a threat their partnership will have on the USA.

Both of 0bama’s parents MET in Russian language class and we know that 0bama’s identification documents are all fraudulent or forged. Who’s he workin’ for? I hope he doesn’t get the chance to be ‘flexible’ with Russia. He may be an agent for Russia from the get-go.

This cannot be true.

Wasn't there a sub near our coasts a few years ago?

In some respects the “side story” of a Russian AGI, which is a floating intellgence gathering and electronics intercept station, entering a U.S. port is even more alarming. These are ocean going vessels that could easily move to safer waters to avoid the storm, which they had more than ample warning of. These ships are serious threats to our Navy, make no mistake about it.

Do we really have those? Next you will tell me that we have these things that planes land on or some silly thing about how we don't have as many bayonets and horses anymore.

You can't fool me.

The Russians are taking advantage of the constant , pants down, attitude of this administrations last days , to do a sonar intteligence run on our largest submarine bases. Same thing probably happened on the west coast they just didn’t get caught.

Come on sonar guys , tighten the heck up.

During the cold war we would not let an unobserved sub get near our coast with out 24 7 harrassment for surface and subsurface assets.

I kind of did notice “that class” but if it is its maiden voyage then I guess it would be a first time. The sub that was here a few years ago may also have the same designation at the time.

This is disturbing.

Thanks for the link. The article suggests that the Russian attack subs are benign because “These are not the class of submarines that can launch intercontinental nuclear missiles.” True but their capabilities and presence is a very real threat to our ballistic missile submarines. In submarine warfare, positioning is everything.

And from the air. Let’s just say we didn’t let them get comfortable back in those days. Sadly our level of vigilence and defensive posture appear to be much different now.

I was a surface sailor and never served on subs. However, I was close enough to know one thing; never believe what you read in the press about subs. There’s more disinformation out there than you would ever believe. And reporters don’t have a clue. The story about the sub in the GOM? Who said they were there? Who said we didn’t know they were there? Do you really think we’re going to tell the press “oh yeah, there was Russian sub in the GOM but we didn’t dedect it”? Like someone else said, there was probably a U.S. fast attack sub in his propeller wash the whole trip.

Given our Navy's degraded ASW capabilities, I am surprised we detected this boat. Again, the Russians could have called the Pentagon and said, “Hey, we've got one of our fast attack nuke subs 200 miles off the East Coast. Find us if you can.”

Its a bit more complicated than that. You can be in international waters and still be in a position to inflict a lot of damage, which is why you may not have the freedom to operate with impunity. Threats of any kind are generally not ignored or warmly welcomed.

Agreed but with this type of threat to AMerica we have the threat of sequestration out there that will completely devestate our fleet. Too bad Romney didn’t slam Obama’s bayonets comment with what are you going to do wait until the enemy subs are on our doorsteps before you decide to enhance our navy..... a comment like that would have been prescient.

Very true. During the Cold War we scrambled Tomcat's to intercept approaching aircraft coming toward the ship.

The vessel is not the normal AGI that most people are used to. This is a sea going tug Sliva Class SB-406.

No true AGI would routinely transmit its position by sending weather that included its latitude and longitude. I've been tracking this vessel in Morse Code for months now. It passed through the English Channel and headed out into the Atlantic. It was probably deployed to monitor the X-37B launch and recovery into and out of Florida?

These are some examples of the Morse Code weather being transmitted by the vessel back in early October off Florida. At the time the X-37B was scheduled to be launched but was cancelled for a later date. RJQ84 is the vessel transmitting the weather and RIW is Moscow. The weather transmitted is international format. The following is the information stripped out to just the latitude and longitude, course speed group.

8345 Kilohertz

8345 RIW DE RJQ84 02001 99295 70781 22212 @0024Z

This equates to

29.5N 78.1W Heading North East at 6-10 Knots

8345 RIW DE RJQ84 01181 99293 70794 22212 @0007Z

This equates to

29.3N 79.4W Heading North East at 6-10 Knots

8345 RIW DE RJQ84 04001 99286 70784 22221 @0001Z

This equates to

28.6N 78.4W Heading East at 1-5 Knots
