I knew great patriotic and competent American Foreign Service Officers in So. Vietnam and Cambodia during the war, and had hoped that the rest of State would be like that.
However, years of research on State Dept. policies on internal security (The Otto Otepka case, Communist penetration, etc)., and the abject failures of the Clinton and Obama administrations, convince me that we need a top-to-bottom review of and house cleaning of that institution.
Too many liberals with rosy views of our enemies, influence and/or control our relations with friends and enemies alike, with the friends getting the shaft and our enemies getting the gold.
Madelaine Halfbright was the worst Secy of State, ever. Clinton isn’t doing much better (lost a Consulate and Ambassador, you did, Hillary). CHristopher Warren was just as bad (lost Iran, you did, Jimmeny Cricket) and Nicaragua.
Our diplomatics and retired retreads like Pickering sound like the British Foreign Service of the late 1930’s. At least Chamberlain later admitted that he was totally wrong about Hitler. Pickering seems to think that Achmed and Khamenei are rational, peace-loving flower children who can be dealth with as equals.
After Nov. 6th, let the purges begin. We owe it to the “Benghazi 4” to avenge their betrayals.
