I think it is because most are Statists: there is nothing that their god [the state] cannot do.
Maybe a legal assumption applies: Silence implies consent.
By what stretch of the imagination does an American government set any automobile mileage standards?
Where is this power found in the Constitution?
What’s Congress’ role in all this?
When was there a vote and who introduced the bill?
Which Amendment allows the executive branch to make law?
That’s the economics of government intervention. Make it costly to do what you want and people will find a work around.
Bastiat was right.
How about letting Congress pass laws and the EPA can simply suggest them? The executive branch cannot, by our Constitution, make law.
“I can easily foresee a future where the most important inheritance will be a well maintained antique car “
That’s why I own a 57 Bel Air and a 67 Camaro which I am restoring to bulletproof condition (stainless steel bolts, rustproofing, etc). They will go to my young niece, she can drive them to eternity. The Bel Air especially is built like a tank.
I’ve run the numbers, even with poor mileage you still come out ahead because of much lower upkeep, interest, etc. You get a non-depreciating car that’s top of the line if you just do quality maintenance and a few upgrades.

Why don’t they just mandate we all travel on magic carpets? They don’t usr any resources just magic.
Sounds promising, I have a 67 Camaro myself as a fun car.
But the feds will drive all these off the roads via legislation, most likely via tailpipe emission testing.
It’s possible you might get a 1000 mile / yr historiacal exemption or something similar, but no way they’re gonna let you dodge the bullets they’re firing.
And after the accidents skyrocket, expect the government to demand speed limits only faster than a snail’s velocity.
I am aware of the risks as you are. But if things get that bad, we may be in Thunderdome territory anyway, in which case enviro laws will be broken by everyone.
It's another piece of Obama's "war on the suburbs" disguised as an EPA/high mileage requirement. Of course they know millions and millions of people won't be able to afford new (or used) vehicles when this goes into effect. That's exactly what they're counting on.
Thanks 92nina.
