Just curious.

Do you really think it would be right to start a civil war over having to buy health insurance that would kill 6M American men? Is it really that important an issue?

Especially considering the last time an issue was fought out over states’ rights (as you believe) the states’ rights side lost anyway?

I was intending to refer to a civil war that would kill 6M Americans, not health insurance that would kill that number.

Though, come to think of it...

Naw, another member came up with that a few years ago.

In the future, everything will have to be excerpted.

There is a bus---phone bus---that is traveling around and will until the election to help get out the vote.

I'll be on the next Tea Party Express National But Tour, which will start next month and end early in Oct. Just a few miles from my abode in CA.

Too late for me to hitch a ride to the shoot on the 6th unfortunately.

That's why I've always advised against right-clicking the Stargate DHD.

Stay out the Bushes, the blogs & the future.

Well, we'll be thinking of you at the shoot and will give
you a shout-out on the video. Because you're a bud even though you are misguided.

And ate-up.

Sorry to have bothered all of you or at all.

That's ok. Many blogging tutorials are in favor of pimping your "material".

I forgot my place

If you pack the naqahdah too tight in the pipe it will be hard to light.

geez what the f#$^& is wrong with some of you people?

All I said was that the ‘civil’ war was more about states rights than it was about slavery

I did not say I wanted a war

what the heck? Do you just want to have an argument?

Sorry if I misunderstood. You seemed to imply that while secession, and a resultant war, may have not been justified by slavery, it would be justified by resistance to mandatory health care payments.

Now while I do believe there are situations in which secession or even civil war would not only be justified but necessary, the defense of an immoral institution like slavery or resistance to medical insurance aren’t among them.

“Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.”

IOW, while there are hills one should die on before giving in, health care isn’t one of them, IMO.

Also, while states rights, specifically the sovereign right to secede, was the mechanism used, they had almost nothing to do with the causes of secession.

The proximate issue of secession was the southern demand for a slave code in the territories, which would use federal power and troops to impose slavery on resisting inhabitants, or they’d take their ball and go home. Republicans and (most) northern Democrats absolutely refused.

Please point out how this was an imposition in any way on the rights of the existing states. It was southern states insisting on certain “rights” for their citizens after they’d moved to a territory, and were no longer citizens of that state.

In fact, the only real states rights issue on the table in the 1850s was northern states using (what they saw as) their states rights to pass laws intended to inhibit enforcement of the federal Fugitive Slave Act. Southerners made it very clear they were infuriated by federal inability or unwillingness to override these states rights.
