5 Ways How NOT to be a Prepper
thesurvivalmom.com ^ | 8/11/12 | thesurvivalmom

1. Don’t believe every wild conspiracy you read on the internet or receive via forwarded email

2. Firearms and ammo are part of a well thought out survival and preparedness plan but shouldn’t take the top spot

3. Don’t model your, “preps” after those of some person

4. Don’t stash a few #10 cans of Mountain House, buy a Glock and a few boxes of ammo, a bottle of bleach, and call it good.

5. Don’t think that purchasing power equals preparedness.

While we’re on the subject, don’t EVEN forget about peroxide, bandages, quinine pills, iodine pills, and a consideration for any maintenance meds you may be jacked up on. A good med supply kit, sutchers (sp?) sutcher needles, syringes, (yea, a box of diabetic syringes are really useful when you need to administer some emergency antibiotic.)

I agree on peroxide, plue rubbing alcohol - both are cheap. I have thread and needles, both new in sealed packages, but my primary suture option is superglue. I recommend buying packs of 3-5 disposable tubes twice a year, and using them for normal household use after a year. That way you always have 2-3 packs, and you know the shelf life for the brands you buy. Superglue is recommended for wound closure and a whole lot easier on everyone than sutures. I have a lot of sterile gauze pads, bandages, and similar. I put $100 into fish antibiotics (pharmacy grade, legal, and cheaper than prescription), so I'm covered there too, probably for a LONG time even in a crisis. Remarkably, no one in my family is on any regular medications, so we're not the model for everyone.

Need to know is an issue. Be careful who you tell and how much you tell.

I've long been an advocate of tomahawks as they are exceptionally versatile. SOG is a good make, but if you'd ever want to practice the art of throwing them, you'd be better with a smooth wooden handle, like the Cold Steel copy of the original Viet Nam 'hawk...

Thank you for the info. I just ordered two from Amazon. One is enough to give you free shipping...$27.18 each. Looks like a great tool! And it comes with a belt holder.

I bought that exact tomahawk for my son in law last Christmas for $20 at WAL-MART, of all places. When I realized what a great deal it was, of course I went back to get my own and they were GONE. Not sure how much they cost now if you can find them, but I bet it’s more than $20.

“...quinine pills...”

Quinine...best source is Schweppes Tonic...mixes well with gin... :) (if it’s not Schweppes it isn’t Tonic)

Hope you have lots of both in your stores, especially when I come to visit...

A cheap supply of sterile bandages can be had by purchasing sanitary napkins for women. A brand name is Kotex, but many stores carry a house brand of the product. The pads and liners (unscented) are individually wrapped and handy as hell for treating wounds.

Costco online has a SOG package with a machete, hatchet, and a really cool multitool for $129.

I'm getting to the point that I need a root cellar (no basements in my area). We're still continuing to "prep" even though we call it canning and saving up for a rainy day.

Thank you. I never heard of this before. Just ordered it from Amazon. When I looked at the reviews, the first one was from a military mom who sent her son in Afghanistan one. He liked it so much she bought three more for his unit.

I always learn something new on these threads.

You can find them at Sportsman’s Warehouse. I got a tactical tomahawk at Walmart last year when Christmas items came out. Walmart may do it again this year.
