The Olympics have officially not been amateur for quite a long time, and were de facto no amateur for even longer.
The whole idea of the Olympics as an amateur event was basically a fraud from the beginning - the only reason it ever was was to make sure that only the aristocracy and independently wealthy could compete, and were uncontaminated by the "lower classes."
