The Beginning of the American Empire
Principles & Policy ^

Americans are resistant to the very idea of an “American empire.” It’s understandable. Our nation’s birth came through revolution against the British Crown and, by extension, the British empire. World War II and our battles against Nazi Germany’s Third Reich (or empire) and Imperial Japan remain in living memory. We still think of ourselves as the New World, and we associate words like monarch and holy war and empire with the Old World. Despite all of our problems, we still see the United States as the “city on a hill,” the shining example of liberty, virtue, and prosperity for the rest of the world.

If we're an empire, from whom are we collecting tribute? Seems to me we're paying rather than collecting. If that's empire, I can do without it.

This is an excellent survey of how our government has betrayed the faith of the Founding Fathers. The philosophy of Altruism is at the root of it all; sacrifice our wealth and young blood for the good of unfortunate “humanity” overseas. Ayn Rand put this into stark perspective for us but it was too late. Too bad she couldn’t have been a ‘founding mother.”

I don’t remember many on this forum protesting the run up to the Iraq war. In fact I remember that a majority felt like we should get involved because the Iraqis were being oppressed.

What I really believed at that time and still believe is that the support for war was more about supporting GWB than the Iraqi peoples freedom.

I didn’t support the decision to go to war because I’m against any unnecessary foreign entanglements. No matter what political party is in power.

Sadly you can’t have it both ways.

I feel like we should do without empire regardless of who’s collecting from whom.

I did, But that’s not Iraq.
Bin Laden was in Afghanistan, He was nowhere near Iraq.
How many dollars has Iraq cost, and when will we stop paying.

My point was that a lot of folks on this conservative forum were all for a war in Iraq. In hindsight. Why.
