Jeff Masters and I recently received an interesting email from Ken Towe who has been researching the NCDC historical temperature database and came across what appeared to be some startling inconsistencies. Namely that the average state temperature records used in the current trends analysis by the NCDC (National Climate Data Center) do not reflect the actual published records of such as they appeared in the Monthly Weather Reviews and Climatological Data Summaries of years past. Here is why.

Yet as we have seen time and time again, with the exception of a -0.05°C cooling applied for UHI (which is woefully under-represented) all “adjustments, improvements, and fiddlings” to data applied by NCDC and other organizations always seem to result in an increased warming trend.

Lowering temperatures in past decades causes a steep rise in the graphs (look, it’s so much warmer now, it’s global warming!). This is now standard operating procedure folks.

This reminds me of a joke.
A painter took on a job where a woman wanted him to paint her great room the color of a small paint chip she presented to him. He mixed the colors and compared again and again and again until he had the perfect color. He then spent a week painting the room and when it was finished, called in the woman to check his work. She compared the chip and said, “Nope, it is not the exact color. Do it again.” So the painter mixed and mixed and mixed colors until he had the exact shade and spent the next week painting the cavernous room. He called her into the room and she again compared the chip to the wall color and said, “This is still not the right color-” at which time the phone rang and she left to answer it. He was recounting the story to his friend and told him how when the woman came back from her phone call, said, “Well, it IS the exact color” and paid him for his work.
The friend asked, “Did the person on the other end of the call convice her that it was the right color?” The painter said, “No, when she left the room, I painted the chip.”
The NOAA is painting the chip.
LOL. That’s a great analogy.
Interesting article at your link. So, a guy writes a paper to say that most scientific papers are wrong. Ironic.

UPDATE: Here’s a graph showing cumulative adjustments to the USHCN subset of the entire US COOP surface temperature network done by Zeke Hausfather and posted recently on Lucia’s Blackboard:
This is calculated by taking USHCN adjusted temperature data and subtracting USHCN raw temperature data on a yearly basis. The TOBS adjustment is the lion’s share.
