Santorum: "I Was Basically Pro-Choice All My Life, Until I Ran for Congress" (1995)
Philadelphia Magazine ^ | December 1995 | Eric Konigsberg

Posted on 03/17/2012 11:01:02 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

IN THE SUMMER OF 1989, Rick Santorum and a fellow associate at the Pittsburgh law firm of Kirkpatrick and Lockhart left work to drive to Three Rivers Stadium for the firm's annual softball game. Sitting behind the wheel, Santorum popped in a tape, and on came the reedy voice of a man lecturing as if to a classroom.

“Listen,” Santorum said. “Newt Gingrich.”

“Who the hell is Newt Gingrich?” the co-worker asked.

Santorum explained that Gingrich was a congressman from Georgia, and that he was the guy to listen to if you were considering a future in politics. “At the time,” says the co-worker, “I had no idea that was something Rick was interested in.” As it turned out, Santorum was already telling people he was running for Congress in the upcoming election. The tape was something he had ordered from GOPAC, Gingrich's political action committee, full of do-it-yourself campaign tips for aspiring candidates.

In recent years, of course, Gingrich's tutelage of Santorum has taken on a much more direct nature. Last September, Santorum, at 37 a Republican U.S. senator from Pennsylvania, managed the Senate floor debate as it passed its welfare bill, all the while working closely with Gingrich, now speaker of the House of Representatives and the country's most powerful Republican. Santorum, who prior to his election to the Senate last year served two terms in the House with Gingrich, is in fact known on Capitol Hill as Gingrich's protégé and his point man in the Senate. The two meet weekly for early-morning swims at the House gym.

Much of Santorum's record, thus far, has been a series of tantrums. More than a dozen times in his first few months in the Senate, Santorum took to the floor to trash Bill Clinton for not drafting a balanced-budget proposal...

This is the heart of my uneasiness with the remaining candidates. They talk the tough conservative talk but once they’re governing, they are too eager to compromise in hopes of getting the Washington Post off their backs. I wish there was a consistent conservative in the running.

And I was pointing out their hypocrisy and sycophancy.

If you don't like that, then you will just have to get over it. Your need to control everyone else’s thoughts and opinions on this forum, along with your repeated, nasty and very personal attacks, when you don't agree with them precedes you.

You point out the sliver in your brother's eye and fail to see the log in your own.

I have seen you bend over backwards to defend Newt. Pot, Kettle, black. And it is pretty pathetic to belittle a very good post about a man's family. But you reveal your own poor nature in doing such.

You are the last person on FR with any standing to lecture the Santorum camp about their beliefs and tactics.

Ah, so because I think it's counterproductive for the Newt and Santorum camps to form circular firing squads, I have a need to control everyone else's thoughts.

Tell me - why hasn't ONE Newt supporter answered my challenge to provide the source for the headline quote? Or backed away from this article as a liberal hatchet job because there is no source?

I'll tell you why - both sides have gotten so wrapped up in this food fight that they are willing to uncritically use any source in their zeal to attack the other conservative candidate. Yesterday someone was apparently citing CREW, for goodness sakes.

You yourself posted a list attacking Santorum's votes with no links for people to be able to research the veracity of those claims. Doughty One researched one of the claims and found it completely misleading.

If pointing out how utterly counterproductive that is for the conservative movement makes me a control freak, well, I'm guilty as charged.

You may now resume wallowing in the mud of your personal political pig pen. Mitt Romney enjoys the spectacle.

And, BTW, I'm voting Newt in the PA primary. But that doesn't mean I think it is OK to tear down Santorum.

The headline is a quote. A QUOTE. Show me the source for that quote.

Hint - none is given. It was journalistic slight-of-hand. And FReepers are falling for it, folks who should know better. Heck, you are citing a RINO active in Planned Parenthood - a GOP-E pro-abort type who probably hates Santorum as much as Philly libs do - as if that unnamed source has any impartiality?

Gawd, man, step back from the abyss.

So you are admittedly OK with the Big Lie in the headline, dude, as long as it furthers your own agenda.

Pathetic.

1995, Rick Santorum: “I was basically pro-choice all my life, until I ran for Congress. But it had never been something I thought about.”

“So why did you change?”

RS: “I sat down and read the literature. Scientific literature.”

“So religion had nothing to do with it?”

RS: “Oh, well, of course. And religion too. It was both of those, science and religion.”

Uh, you are citing the very same source - this article.

Show me the source in this article for Santorum's quote. No mention of who he said this to, such as an editorial board.

Why don’t you ask Santorum himself?

When Karen announced to Dr. Allen, the abortionist doctor with whom she lived for seven years 1982-1989, that she met a new guy Rick Santorum, and she was moving out, she told him that Rick was “pro-choice”:

Dr Allen told the Philadelphia City paper in 2005: ‘When she moved out to go be with Rick, she told me I’d like him, that he was pro-choice and a humanist.’

This great debate on Santorum’s pro life/choice history is ... well, great.

Think we’ll have one on Santorum’s history on jobs, taxes, government spending, spending cuts and judges, any time soon?

You are citing a second-hand source, and someone with a couple of reasons to trash pro-life Rick Santorum.

The headline of this article is a quote. That means there should be a source. None is given. That should set off alarm bells in any FReeper who has been here for any length of time. Yet not one Newt supporter has been willing to admit that this article stinks like the liberal hatchet job it is. Sorry, but that is not a reflection on Santorum - but YOU.
