It recently came to my attention that Sodium hypochlorite is possibly the best option for point of use water purification.
Sodium hypochlorite is sold commercially as “ Dakin’s Solution “ or “ Eusol “.

Simple recipe, and the components last MUCH longer and are multi use compared to pool shock. Smaller storage footprint. Can be used for dental endodontic cleansing.

I like the SALT idea ,, I intend to buy several 40# bags of the “water conditioner” salt to use when storing meat ... assuming electric power is scarce or unaffordable... I can always use it in the swimming pool if it’s unnecessary (chlorine generator) ... with that said chlorine bleach can be created by simply passing a current through salt water... commercial salt==>chlorine generators sell for as little as $150 on eBay (listed for “above ground” pools) although you may need to trick the electronics to get the strength you want..

And you wont eat or wash yourself without them...
Think about it.

"Yep. I'm also a big fan of solar power and solar accessories. "...pressure water."

I have a gravity-fed system (hill) for pressure without a booster pump and will install a PV solar power system for the well pump, when time and money allow.

"It won't do serious refrigeration, heating or A/C unless you have a LOT of panels,..."

Check this out.

See the "Residential PV Sizing Chart (Farenheit)" link (PDF) lower on the page for PV module and battery requirements (low requirements). ...two $295 PV modules (Kyocera 135s can be UPS'd from Northern Arizona Wind & Sun) and two golf cart batteries for less than $100 each from Sam's Club. A Morningstar SunSaver 15 Amp MPPT controller would work nicely with that setup (cheap).

For heating, have a look at this for the most BTUs per dollar.

$2K Solar Space + Water Heating -- One Simple DIY System
http://www.builditsolar.com/Projects/SpaceHeating/DHWplusSpace/Main.htm

And don't forget wind (tough homebuilt).

Our latest 10 foot wind turbine

Remember that frequent and enduring winds are required. Pair that with a Midnite Classic controller and Clipper for the ultimate rig (more watts). There are also 17 and 20-foot projects--great for small machine shops.

Independence, country style. Not so much "prepping" but a way of life for cheapskates like myself. And no, I haven't done all of those projects, yet, but most likely will before long. ...working on the rest of them while using a little PV power plant right now (modified RV).

The Lord uses the good ones; the bad ones use the Lord.

The bad ones TRY to use the Lord.

Oops...left out the freezer and refrigerator link.

http://sundanzer.com/solar-power-refrigerators/chest-style/

The file -—> “Residential PV Sizing Chart (Farenheit)” (lower on the page).

Hope that stuff helps, if you’re looking for off-grid energy with more watts/BTUs per dollar. I’ve studied and worked at it for a few years.

Dude.....I heated a BIG gunite and plaster spa in SoCal for many years..back in the late 70's-early 80's....

Copper tubes, big glass encased collectors.....Worked great!!!

The point is...and you know this...is this tech works, when it's applied right.

...whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body, but the things that out of the mouth come from the heart and these make a man ‘unclean’ for out of the mouth come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony and slander. These are what make a man unclean. Matthew 15: 17-20

OK looks like there are a lot of people of edge today and frankly I think its a sign of what’s coming and in our ‘third sense’ or what even you care to call it has us on edge.

So to get us back on subject I like to point out that the Bosnian War survivor Selco has written extensively about his experiences including the act of bartering goods and services in a for real SHTF situation. This is no arm chair quarterback talking.

Theres a good amount in this article about how to go about trading, what was traded and so forth. Like:

First almost nobody were out during the day because of snipers, line of defence was very close, so whatever you have to do, you do it during the night, trade something, look for firewood (i can express how much this was important in town, and hard), looking for anything, check somebody, go to hear news (very very important, lot of people get killed because they go somewhere just to see what happening, or what s new) remember, no news, no radio ,no tv, nothing, rumors fed lot of people.

Already explained, you can stay home and die of hunger and cold, or even infection of some small wound or go out and risk your life, try to find – trade anything useful

I did have situations concerning my house only, it is no need for too much details, we had more fire power, and brick wall.

Also we had something like street watch, people from my street were good organized, in case of gangs, now there were a lot shootings.

There was pretty much shooting in town, i did not have enough weapon at the beginning, one rifle and one pistol (ww2), maybe 100 bullets, later i trade some things for more rifles and ammo, remember i gave car battery for 2 rifles.

How much ammo ?

A LOT, as more as you can.

Most of the time you are not able to determine who is enemy or friend, expect my family and few real friend, everybody else is potential enemy. When your friend must choose between his child s death and your death quess who is going to choose.

Rumors, somebody tells you that some old guy few block away have some cans and he is looking for ammo or whatever, you go there, as i say you are always looking for something. Same some people would came in my street as traders, witha some goods.

There was something like trade street during the night, actualy it was a big ruins of sport center, you can go overthere and look for something or offer something, but it was not controlled by anyone so it was too dangerous.

It was primitive pretty much, brick wall around house, bags of sand on windows and doors, over that bags we used whatever you can, big pieces of metal, stones, inside house we put all kind of stuff on windows, only small openning left for rifle, always 5 members of family ready for fight, one always outside on street hidden.
