Anyone remember those TV Westerns that dominated the screens in both the USA and UK during the 50s and 60s? They were evicted wholesale after Fred Silverman of CBS instigated his “rural purge” in 1970.
Why did CBS and the other networks close them down? Who knows, because ratings were certainly not low. The Western on page or screen always had an appeal both inside and outside the USA.

I watch some of them on Encore Westerns. My favorite - the Virginian. Percy Faith composed the theme.

It is not a coincidence that the most cowboy state in America is also the most conservative-- Wyoming, the place where I was born.
Many of these are available for streaming or shown on Cable channels such as the Western Channel. Gunsmoke and The Rifleman were my favorites then, and still are. Bonanza was great for a time, but they would often throw in a stupid story line, like “Hoss and the Leprechauns”.
Two I miss very much and maybe they don’t fill the bill as classic TV Westerns, are Wild Wild West, and Kung Fu. Wish I could find those shows.
Roy Rogers is on, I think every day on one of the channels I get on Dish Network. The best thing about it is at the close of every show, Roy and Dale sing “Happy Trails to You”.

My earliest memory is riding my spring rocking horse with the Rawhide theme on the TV.
