The Mississippization of California
The American Conservative ^ | February 14, 2012 | Rod Dreher

Posted on 02/19/2012 8:37:21 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

Heather Mac Donald says California is in for a huge, demographics-driven economic shift:

California is in the middle of a far-reaching demographic shift: Hispanics, who already constitute a majority of the state’s schoolchildren, will be a majority of its workforce and of its population in a few decades. This is an even more momentous development than it seems. Unless Hispanics’ upward mobility improves, the state risks becoming more polarized economically and more reliant on a large government safety net. And as California goes, so goes the nation, whose own Hispanic population shift is just a generation or two behind.

The scale and speed of the Golden State’s ethnic transformation are unprecedented. In the 1960s, Los Angeles was the most Anglo-Saxon of the nation’s ten largest cities; today, Latinos make up nearly half of the county’s residents and one-third of its voting-age population. A full 55 percent of Los Angeles County’s child population has immigrant parents. California’s schools have the nation’s largest concentration of “English learners,” students from homes where a language other than English is regularly spoken. From 2000 to 2010, the state’s Hispanic population grew 28 percent, to reach 37.6 percent of all residents, almost equal to the shrinking white population’s 40 percent. Nearly half of all California births today are Hispanic. The signs of the change are everywhere—from the commercial strips throughout the state catering to Spanish-speaking customers, to the flea markets and illegal vendors in such areas as MacArthur Park in Los Angeles, to the growing reach of the Spanish-language media.

The poor Mexican immigrants who have fueled the transformation—84 percent of the state’s Hispanics have Mexican origins—bring an admirable work ethic and a respect for authority too often lacking in America’s native-born population. Many of their children and grandchildren have started thriving businesses and assumed positions of civic and economic leadership. But a sizable portion of Mexican, as well as Central American, immigrants, however hardworking, lack the social capital to inoculate their children reliably against America’s contagious underclass culture. The resulting dysfunction is holding them back and may hold California back as well.

Read the whole thing. Lots of startling information in the piece, at least startling to me. For example:

The University of California, California State University, and the community-college system already grant in-state tuition to illegal aliens. (Back in 2003, when then–UC regent Ward Connerly asked university officials why illegal aliens should get a $12,000 annual tuition break when, say, a citizen from Washington State did not, they answered: Our budget will be cut if we don’t go along.) This past October, however, Brown signed a bill going even further and granting illegal aliens taxpayer-funded tuition assistance and fee waivers. The so-called California Dream Act was not a popular bill, except among Latinos: 55 percent of voters opposed the law, and only 30 percent of whites supported it, but 79 percent of Latinos approved of it. In one generation, observes CSU San Jose political scientist Larry Gerston, California has gone from outlawing affirmative action and banning nonessential government services to illegal aliens to granting them free tuition subsidies, a change that “speaks to the growing pressure of Latinos on the legislative process.”

Mac Donald says in the piece that California’s future looks a lot like Mississippi’s present.

We (Californians) tried to stop this back in 1994 with Prop 187.

But we even though we passed Prop 187 we were defeated by a scheming federal judge, the Democratic Party, and the traitorous Open Border wing of the GOP. We had Bill Bennett and Jack Kemp fly out here to oppose us. And of course when the appalling Dubya took office he threw gasoline on the illegal alien fire.

That was a unanimous sentiment here back when the ad campaign was running. I’m sure there are Freepers who have sworn off Absolut vodka permanently just because of that Mexican ad.

You forgot Newt, who betrayed you in Congress by deep sixing the Jordan Commission.

“You forgot Newt, who betrayed you in Congress by deep sixing the Jordan Commission.”

Newt has a history of betraying his conservative allies but I’d forgotten that one. Even Clinton supported the Jordan Commission proposals, but never underestimate the ability of open border Republicans to be as far Left as possible when it comes to immigration.

Barbara Jordan was a black Texas Democrat who was also a patriot. One of the great tragedies is that she died before she could rally some of her party of join with conservative Republicans to do something about the border.

“While she was Chair of the US Commission on Immigration Reform she argued that “it is both a right and a responsibility of a democratic society to manage immigration so that it serves the national interest.” Her stance on immigration is cited by opponents of current US immigration policy who cite her willingness to penalize employers who violate US immigration regulations, to tighten border security, and to oppose amnesty or any other pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants and to broaden the grounds for the deportation of legal immigrants.”

Mexican Flag Day event held in Santa Ana

February 20th, 2012, 3:00 pm · · posted by Theresa Cisneros

Veronnika Diaz was among those who performed during the Mexican Flag Day celebration in Santa Ana.

About 7,000 people attended a Mexican Flag Day ceremony in downtown Santa Ana on Sunday afternoon, aimed at honoring the Mexican and American flags and educating many in the audience about their Mexican roots.

The eighth annual event – which featured flag presentations, live entertainment, a brief history lesson and more – ran from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Plaza Santa Ana, an outdoor space at the corner of Fourth and French streets.

The gathering was sponsored by Los 32 Por Mexico en Orange County – a group dedicated to preserving Mexican culture and traditions – and was supported by members of ADELSA (Asociacion de Empresarios Latinos de Santa Ana) – a group of Latino-owned businesses in Santa Ana.

Día de la Bandera (Flag Day) is observed in Mexico on Feb. 24. Mike Gonzalez, a business owner and president of Los 32 por Mexico, said his group usually holds its event on the nearest Sunday to the holiday.

Sunday’s celebration started off with a salute to the flag of the United States.

“We wanted this to be a tribute to this great nation, which has taken us in and given us so much,” Gonzalez said.
It continued with a rendition of the Mexican national anthem, a lesson on the Mexican flag and its symbolism, and a procession of young women wearing traditional outfits from each of Mexico’s 32 states.

The day also included entertainment by ballet folklorico groups, solo artists and musical groups.

The goal, Gonzalez said, was to educate Mexican immigrants and their children about their heritage.

“We want them to be proud to be Mexican,” he said in Spanish. “We want parents to keep that umbilical cord to Mexico intact so that their children can grow up strong and knowledgeable about their rich culture.”

Proud to be Mexican. What the hell is there to be proud of. I’m not being slanderous here. America has not only produced a massive bounty of 20th century technical innovations, but she’s fed the world and helped save the Europeans from tyranny in not one but 2 world wars. She has been first in space, broken speed records, dominated world pharmaceutical innovation, cured numerous diseases.

I could go on for 3 pages.

What the hell do Mexicans have to be proud of. They were a 3rd world country until NAFTA in 1994, when our robber barons began loading them up with formerly American factory work. In many ways, Mexico is still a third world country.

What the hell does Mexico have to be proud of? Oil reserves?

What a freaking joke.

As I’m sure you know all too well pride is a big part of the Mexican package.

Santa Ana had one killing last year as a result of an argument over which Mexican state is the best. There may have been more than that, but that one happened to make the news.

There aren’t enough Somali immigrants to go around. Kansas City is bursting at the seams with Moslem Somalis who openly direct their wives (yes polygamists) how to vote in the voting booth. They have received judicial OK to do so after a losing candidate sued. No more secret ballot in Kansas City. No more free and fair elections.
