This suspicion that we have exorcised the fear of the law from the criminal mind with soft policing and a “caring” judiciary is often reinforced by the actions of the law when an ordinary citizen seeks to defend his or her property or physical safety when confronted by lawbreakers – hence the frisson of delight most of us have in movie scenes where the tables are turned on some criminal who expects his victim to be terrified into meek obedience when faced with the threat of violence by knife….

The best example of this sort of "justice" I've seen is a movie on a cable channel called "Law Abiding Citizen." Some bad guys raped and murdered the family of the one man you'd never want really pissed off at you, but the real mistake was when the prosecuting DA agreed to take a plea deal to assure the death penalty for one of the bad guys (it just happened that the worst of the bad guys rolled over on the other).

It was a riveting story, though I think we can all agree that while justice wasn't done in the cases of this guy's family, he did go just a bit overboard. Great movie though.
