In a campaign speech late Tuesday night, Governor Rick Perry stated that he is "returning to Texas" to reassess whether he is going to continue running for President.
The speech contained several emotional moments, in particular two moments. The first was when he read a letter from an adoring supporter who called him a "great man." The letter described a conversation that Mr. Perry had had with a soldier and how his supporter looked on in awe as he watched Governor Perry call the veteran his "Christian brother."
The second was when Perry announced that he would be returning to Texas to reassess whether he will continue his pursuit for the White House. Mr. Perry paused several times and appeared to be on the verge of tears as he winded down his speech.
Governor Perry came in fifth place in the Iowa caucus today, barely breaking ten percent of the vote. His announcement tonight likely marks the end to his campaign.
Misleading title.
Don’t believe it.
I hope he stays in the race.
Perry’s still in the race.
He is not out. Not even close.
BS
The writing is on the wall. For Rick Perry.
Time for him to do what’s best for the united states.
He was supposed to go to SC tomorrow.
Told y’all for weeks that 10% and 5th place is pathetic.
He’s a great governor though just not ready for the biggest stage of all.
That dog don’t hunt.
Will the vote got to Newt, that is the question?
I hope he stays in, it was his to lose when he declared, and he just stumbled too much out of the gate. Darn shame, he certainly had some qualities over the other candidates, but I don’t think he was well-prepared at the start, and he hasn’t recovered. But if he does drop out, he would be the first choice for VP.
I admire the Perry supporters for their unbridled enthusiasm for their candidate put when a candidate says he is reassesing his campaign..the campaign is over.
I’m watching it live. He said that. What is misleading? He is my favorite BTW, and I am stunned, but he looked very, very tired. :(
Good. Go back to doing your job. I am sure you will be fine running Texas.
Rick Perry was my candidate just behind Newt.. please Perry people know that if Newt was behind Perry in SC I would be for Perry BIG TIME.. it’s now time to conciliate behind Newt Gingrich to defeat Romney in SC
I got really angry at Perry’s supporters after the “heartless” comment and I probably shouldn’t have. Over the last few weeks, you might say that I took something of a liking to him. He wasn’t my first choice, but I would gladly have taken him over Romney.
That's not what I got from that speech. He seemed very sentimental and sounded like he saw the writing on the wall. I was surprised by it because I thought he had enough dough to make it through to FL. He may have shot the wad in IA and came up snake eyes.
He’s more ready than the other candidates. He has executive experience - unlike the others, except Mittens. He kind of messed up early on, but, people need to give him another look. We’ve had far too many Senators elected president and most of the stunk up the WH.
Perry is done. He will likely drop out tomorrow.
Fork time, and not just for Perry.
I admire the Perry supporters for their unbridled enthusiasm for their candidate.
They are the nastiest fans in history. They were ankle biters and deserve this loss totally. They put down any body who spoke the truth and asked me if I was smoking dope with my support of Santorum. Yep....such nerve. I could not be more proud of President Santorum!!!!
Change of plans, Maybe he rather have all the campaign money than continue the path.
Me too.
He is merely saying that he will go to the well of faith.
It’s an allegory.
I could be wrong.
It would be America’s loss
If he looks that tired after a prelim. How is he going to make it through a total, all out, presidential election?
I’m sorry but we must deal with reality.. Rick Perry WILL NOT be the nominee.. BUT.. he could be Newt’s VP pick and if you really want to beat Romney it’s time to come down to SC and put all our non Romney marbles towards Newt..
I hope he stays in, still think he’s the best man to face Obama.
God Bless Rick Perry and men like him.
Prayers for Rick Perry - we need this good, Christian leader now more than ever.
I think a Santorum/Perry ticket makes a lot of sense. Provides the best geographical balance of any ticket.
Yes. I like Rick Perry but this is just not his year. If he gets out it helps Newt.
You want to get behind a 4th place RINO, when there is a 1st place conservative? Romney will be thrilled.
Good luck to Mr Santorum, Mrs Bachmann and Mr Cain.
He is a politician. A good man, but still a politician. Going home to reassess the campaign = dropping out. Kinda like when Cain said he was going to have a heartfelt conversation with his wife and reassess the race. Different circumstances, but still just sugarcoating the words which really mean, "I'm done".
I just googled; a number of sources are reporting this, so apparently it’s true.
Iowa, you’re a joke. You just helped shoot down the best man we had for the presidency. No other candidate even comes close.
Perry has never been my first choice, but was in the top three at all times. He is an honorable man and is putting the interest in the country ahead of his own desires by openly considering what to do at this point. If Bachmann were to do the same, we will not be stuck with Romney.
At this point, Santorum is my favorite and I could certainly support a ticket made up of some combination of Santorum, Perry, Gingrich and Bachmann.
When Rick Perry entered the race, he sucked all the air out of the other candidates, then went and threw a sure nomination away to support illegals and insult those of us who want them out. His remark “heartless” cost him the campaign and he has never recovered.
All self-inflicted!
You think Perry’s fans were the nastiest? I see the posters who didn’t like Perry as the nastiest. Did Perry fans add all those hateful KEYWORDS to all of the Perry threads? No they did not, I know who the suspects are.
I agree. He was too quick out of the shoot after his back surgery. No way I could endure the campaign trail with that weighing on me physically. Go home. Get some rest. Consider a VP spot.
are you really basing your pick on Iowa?.. LMAO.. are you saying that if Santorum wins the Iowa pot luck supper straw poll and Romney wins his home state of NH and Gingrich wins SC(the first REAL primary) Gingrich should drop out?
Dedicated to you Good Governor Perry.
Never gonna keep me down

Oh well. We can fight that all night but it doesn’t matter as Perry is done. Why waste our time on a candidate who lost. We need to look forward to assisting Santorum to become the next President of the United States.
I listened to Perry’s speech. It was not the speech of a man who is staying in the race.
Likewise for Bachmann. I suspect they’ll both drop out before New Hampshire. Perhaps tomorrow. And perhaps with endorsements already on their lips.
I hope he endorses Santorum before dropping out.
I’m keeping my tag until forced to change it.
I find him likable and he has a great record to back him up. But unfortunately his debate performances were so rough that it’s impossible to imagine him beating Obama...particularly with the media trashing him for sounding stupid - and you know they’ll do this.
That “oops” moment was really really bad.
Santorum is yapping it up about his dead daughter.
I understand his heart for her, but is this a winning campaign speech?
Its pretty weird.
I was one of the first on FR to defend him, but this **** is getting weird.
You talk about your dead kids in campaign speeches to win the general electorate?
