The rest of us already have ID cards.

So do the illegal immigrants. They just don't show theirs when asked. Instead they show forged documents, or find an opportunity to earn income in a way which does not require compliance with the existing law. What makes you think they will do something different in the future?

The problem is distinguishing the illegals from the legals. It used to be obvious, but apparently common sense has been outlawed. Also, you have different states with different laws—> some very illegal friendly.

I think this is an idea whose time has come. As you say, I already carry ID, so don’t see this as a big deal.
