December 1944

World War Two was in overdrive. The major powers were slugging it out about the world - in Europe, Africa, and in the Pacific for 5 long years already- since 1939.

The United States had entered the fray when the US Congress had declared war on Japan (December 8, 1941) for attacking Pearl Harbor (December 7, 1941).

Then on December 11, 1941, Germany and Italy had declared war on the United States. We were in the war for the long haul.

Early December 1944, we had thought the war, at least in Europe, would be over in a few weeks and we'd be home for Christmas.

But Adolf Hitler had other plans and fought back with everything he got.

Is there more worth reading?

Can you share it here? Excerpts are kind of lame.

Creighton Abrams was the commander of the lead battalion in the relief of Bastogne.

They have gone down in history as “ The Battling Bastards of Bastogne”

God, what a group of men. Every damn one of them.

I don’t think it was “nuts”; more like FO.

You probably are right. But that’s what was in the movies.

“You probably are right. But that’s what was in the movies.”

From what I have read McAuliffe was woken and told of the surrender demand. He said “aw nuts”. When ask what to tell the Germans he said that his first statement was good enough, to just tell them “nuts”.

The movie “Battle Ground” was a pretty damn good account of the Bastogne siege. Not the story of the Battle of the Bulge, but real good about Bastogne.

Thanks NEWwoman.

It's my third favorite military quip, my second favorite is, "They've got us surrounded again, the poor bastards." (Creighton Abrams). My fourth favorite (no, you didn't ask) is from World War One -- "Lafayette, we are here!" (Charles Stanton, July 4, 1917). My favorite? Patton's speech to the Third Army in entire, not the sanitized version from the movie.

This topic appears to be pimpin' a 'blog, but I don't care. It's also a modern history topic, but I don't care. It was a cold winter 67 years ago. Relief was promised by Christmas Day, but it didn't make it -- 4th Armored Division broke through on the 26th.

To all -- please ping me to other topics which are appropriate for the GGG list.

I read that in some of the sites when I was researching the blog. The General said - “aw, nuts.” So the General put Nuts in his written response.

Now - I’m asking for some friendly advice, so I can be a better FRer. I had been adviced not to put excerpts for blogs. (I did if for its hard to get many hyperlinks & embedded clips in the body.)

Is that breaking any rules? Is it a major turn off? Any opinion?

From a link in the article:

The True Story of The Patton Prayer

Our military and nation can never be great without such men of faith.
