Every TSA agent I’ve seen checking ID has physically checked them (for things like the hidden foils, etc., that only show up under certain lighting, for example), which means actually taking it from the passenger to perform the examination.

Okay, say your driver license does not have a photo on it, because if you are from TN like I have. It is not required for citizen 60 years and over, but you are retired from the military and have a Military ID card you are not allowed to hand your ID card over to just anyone. You can show the ID card, but he can not physically hold it in his hand

BTW, the last time I flew was in 2009 and when I checked in at the desk and picked up my boarding pass, I showed the agent my drivers license. She asked me if I had another ID with a photo on it and I pulled out my Dependent Military ID card and showed her that. She said this works.
