On Buying Gold & Silver for Survival Preparedness
SHTF School ^ | 12/8/11 | Selco

No, gold and silver was not like second money, or second value during SHTF, it was not even worth like in normal times, and in most of the cases it was dangerous to have it a lot (actually it was too dangerous to have anything in great amounts and let other people to know that) If you had for example 1000 gold coins, and let s say that one coin worth 150 USD in normal times, you could think that you are rich in shtf.

But in reality it was hard to find someone who give you some food or battery or whatever useful for one coin. Gold coin was not useful for 90 percent of people, what they could use it for? Eat it? Start fire with that?

Two words: KFC Wetnaps!

TOILET PAPER.

I am convinced that TP will become more valuable than gold within days of SHTF. Even if "SHTF" is only a temporary disruption in distribution to local supermarkets.

The longer the emergency or disruption, the more valuable it will get. I'm contemplating filling my entire house with the stuff so that I can corner the post-apocalypse market for usable TP.

Get a one pound bag of calcium hypochlorite at Home Depot or pool supply places. $5.00 for a bag. It will treat 10,000 gallons of water. Find instructions online for mixture.

Oh: and buy some body armor or a concealable kevlar vest while you can still get them easily.

www.bulletproofme.com

I have no business relationship with them other than as a satisfied customer. Their products arrived on time, as advertised, and I was shocked at the quality and condition of the "used" Safariland IIIA vests we got. They looked like brand new.

I have no problem recommending them at all.

My point is that silver and gold have went up 6 or 7 times from their lows several years back. Why, knowing that, would I want to buy gold in silver when I could by guns, bullets, MRE’s, seed, canning jars, garden tools, wood stoves, water purifiers, etc., etc., etc., - things I can actually use to survive - that have at worst went up say 100% in that time, stayed the same, or even went down?

By your preps first. If you have leftover money after that buy gold or silver as a store of value. Problem is you could give me a million dollars and I could spend it all on preps. There is very little reason to buy silver or gold beyond a small stash to use if you get lucky enough to find someone to take it after SHTF.

I buy $200 worth of batteries all at once twice a year, which is a whole lot of batteries, and I store them in a cool dark room in my basement. When I buy a new set, I donate the ones that are two years old to a nearby children’s hospital, and they use the batteries to power kids’ toys.

“Hedge in all directions.”

I don’t think it could have been said better. You talk to anyone who’s lived off the land and that’s pretty much the operating rule. Backup’s to your backup’s backups.

Hedge in all directions.

Some good advice. The world may become unstable in places, but other places will be relatively stable and they aren't going to accept pieces of paper in trade for the stuff they've got (oil, manufactured goods, etc). They will want your gold (through some middlemen of course).

The main thing that folks are missing in the gold buying discussion is that it is NOT something you use when the SHTF. It is something you use AFTER the SHTF.

Bears repeating. Gold is for storing and maintaining wealth for when any perceived SHTF crisis is over. If any precious metal is to be accepted for trading during a SHTF scenario, it will likely be junk silver coins, because of the smaller denomination value and verifiability of authenticity.

Batteries in current packaging generally seem to have an “expiration date” marked on them, and for modern alkalines, that seems to be measured in “years”.

““Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Siege of AR-558 (#7.8)” (1998)
Quark: Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, Nephew. They’re a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon. You don’t believe me? Look at those faces. Look in their eyes.”

Again, ripped off from Robert Heinlein.

Can you post the passage being ripped off? I’d like to compare for myself.

Gold has been used to buy passage in tough times. Jews used it to escape Germany for example.

As I said, gold is for bad times, not apocalyptic, and most of occupied Europe was far from apocalyptic. However, if you were in the Jewish Ghetto of Warsaw, gold wasn't nearly as valued as food.

IMO its not a either/or question but to buy some to go with your other preps.

Concur.

I was up late and am just now having coffee.

What you say is true about varying degrees of incivility.

In the end in Road Warrior times. firearms and ammo are the premium. With that power you can obtain your survival needs or force those with those items to cooperate.

I don’t see survival like in the woods with a storehouse and guns but more of a local group effort against outsiders.

a sanctuary...where groups survive rurally against maruaders

sort of like the most devastated parts of the South after Sherman’s march which is about our closest approximation to such things...locals banded together after the main body of Union forces moved on and protected themselves from bandits and deserters and freed slaves with ill intent...most slaves unless they joined the Bluebacks stayed on the farm uncertain in the chaos where it was at least safe and warm and some food they had helped hide.

Other bad case examples in the US history are Indian Wars...obviously...group up.

And urban riots...the most recent.

The lesson from that is be armed well, don’t live near high concentrations of Goblins and be prepared to move.

None of this takes into account conflict with govt forces which is today a ballgame to which at least here on this soil there is no modern parallel.

It would be devastating...possibly dwarf anything that has come before in terms of loss of life and brutality.

It would only be worse if the Chinese now with their billions and billions reverted to Mao-Pol Pot cleansing efforts or civil war.

I fear...in fact I know...one day. We humans will once again prove ourselves capable of unspeakable atrocities and it won’t just be dirt people with machetes or peasants. It will be larger and more dead....and it will be ideological.

Looking for it. I have a clear memory of it, but can’t remember which of his books it was in.
