I also like them...it reminds me of Rex Stout books, where his assistant Archie is doing the story telling, as in a voice over movie..(if that makes sense to you). Perhaps a little more like reading a book when there is voice over, telling the story with acting added...
Not too sure of the time frame but back in the 80's Japans economy was booming and they were buying up American property like the Chinese are doing now...Talk at the time of Japan buying Rockefeller Center etc..(or maybe it was the late 70's)
FX driven movies account for 2 maybe 3 dozen movies released a year. They’re the high profile tent pole movies so everybody knows about them. But really outside the summer blockbuster season FX are largely incidental.
The thing to keep in mind is that big time Hollywood releases 3 or 4 movies a week, and indy/ art house Hollywood runs a similar pace. That adds up to about 200 movies a year being released theatrically in some form or another, let’s not even get into cable channel produced and direct to DVD. What that basically means is you can’t make a blanket statement about movies. There’s good comedies, there’s bad comedies, there’s FX driven, there’s plot driven with lots of FX (Rise of the Planet of the Apes fits that, yeah there’s tons of FX but it’s a damn good movie), there’s Michael Bay FX festivals.
I think the ultimate statement on how impossible it is to make blanket statements about movies is being released this Thanksgiving, Hugo, a kids movie by Martin Scorsese... no seriously Scorsese is about to release a movie intended to be watched by kids, no f-bombs, nobody getting their heads blown off, good clean family fun. It kind of frightens me actually.
Well it’s a feel good comedy for girls. But it’s got Emma Stone. I like her a lot.
I like Zodiac a lot, well crafted all the way around. And definitely better every time through. A lot of real subtle technique.
I agree that many you list are very good.
I would add Anonymous, The Way, and a few others released this year to your list.
There are a few like Hobo with A Shotgun that are terrible and not worth anyones time.
Actually I loved Hobo with a Shotgun, but I have a weakness for grindhouse style trash. It’s definitely trash, but really really fun.
I just thought it was stereotyped to an offensive degree.
I wouldn’t argue against that. From all accounts kind of matches the book that way. Lots of broad brush painting.
