Facebook upgrade spurs fears of political bias
The Daily Caller ^ | May 24, 2011 | Neil Munro

Facebook’s managers are deploying a new software upgrade that will dismantle myriad groups of like-minded political activists unless they get a special software-key from the company.

But Facebook manager are providing very limited information about which groups are being favored with the new key, prompting some activists to complain about possible political favoritism among Facebook managers, and many other activists to experiment with techniques and tricks to get the needed upgrade-key.

“Who is being given the upgrade?” asked Pamela Geller, the New York organizer of a 15,000-member group opposed to Islamist political groups. Without the special key, groups lose access to their members.

...“The Coalition to Save Marriage in New York” is a group of 1,163 social-conservatives seeking to preserve traditional marriage’s role as an institution for parents and child-rearing. The group has been very active this year trying to derail a gay-marriage push in the state assembly, but the group doesn’t have the upgrade, said the group’s administrator, Jason McGuire in Rochester, N.Y. “Nobody else that I know got one,” he said. “You do have to wonder if Facebook is leaning towards liberal positions, instead of being on open format,”.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence got the upgrade for its 1,000-member group. “We changed over very smoothly,” said David Churchill, the network-manager at the D.C.-based gun-control group.

...The activists’ worries about Facebook’s possible political tilt are fortified by the political activities of its founders and employees. The company’s employees donated heavily to the Obama campaign in 2008, just as did the employees of Google and Microsoft. Facebook-founder Chris Hughes workers as head of the online-organizing campaign for the Obama campaign, while company chief Mark Zuckerberg has declared himself to be an Obama supporter.

Bottom line is, it’s their site, they can do as they wish with it.

Given that the Facebook board and Obama’s cabinet/DNC is a a revolving door, it’s not really a mystery who will be favored.

Facebook is not hard to repeat. Someone else should just re-do it, without the liberal crap.

If the Facebook / MSM / Obama complex is smart, you’d think they would gladly give the needed keys to any conservative group so they can monitor them. I mean, Facebook is like the CIA’s best invention. They get people to basically tell everything about themselves. No warrants, no searches, no eavesdropping. Why would they want to mess with such a good resource. But, one never knows when liberal orthodoxy trumps logic. They just might be that stupid and not give the groups the keys.

Does Palin’s group have a key?

That will be the ultimate litmus test.

Don’t have to re-do it, just move back to MySpace. It’s owned by the same parent company as Fox News...

Control of the media and election fraud are big concerns for 2012.

This seems to be all about gearing up for the election. Maybe after they get Obama re-elected it will change.

this was announce today. It makes sense that fake facebook posts are part of this.

not really..if it’s public access then questions come up

try doing whatever you want if you own a business

like excluding blacks or making them eat in back

or not making handicapped ramps and johns etc

or hiring dicrimination

and so forth

“it’s their site they can do what they want” is not a reality at the size and public access facebook is

just watch...if they are discriminating on users they will be challenged

like Google, it’s so obvious they stack reference to suit themselves when they can...and folks bitch about it

now THERE'S something there's really a market for. A good, efficient Conservative (or even neutral) search engine.

Bottom Line:

Zudkerberg has just given all his competitors a huge competitive advantage and they will take it. Watch for a big advertising blitz by My Space and others.

This is not good business if you are looking to dominate the social space. Basically they are giving it up to their competitors.

That 50 billion implied valuation will be laughable in one year. Try 3.5 to 5 billion.

This administrating seems (imo)to abuse the power of office to indirectly control the media. GE received tarp money and big government contracts, pays no taxes. They also influence NBC, MSNBC Progressive agenda.

Goldman Sachs received bailouts, some back door through AIG, have maintained many key positions in this administration, They recently invested $450 million in facebook, which now is aggressively changing policy before the election.
