After watching the PBS Civil War documentary, I’ve become a Southern Sympathizer.

40% seems a bit low to me. History has proven to me that the South had it exactly right when it comes to States Rights. I think slavery would have died a slow death if the war had not been fought.
On a slightly related note, I have bought some Confederate money on Ebay, about 300 Reb Dollars worth, and I bought it for one reason....when the South rises again, I won’t be broke. :)

I have considerable sympathy for the Confederacy, ever since I saw ‘Gone With the Wind. After all, they were a part of the history of the United States. Of course I am overjoyed that they lost the war. It is interesting to see that the majority of southerners today do not even have the sympathy for the Confederacy that I do.
Four out of ten Southerners are unaware what an engine of oppressive big government the Confederacy was. I’m among the six out of ten Southerners who realize that the right side won the Civil War.

you can see it here when people rabidly argue in defense of an unnecessary and brutal war and their iconic lincoln despite any amount of evidence you provide.
our only chance is to teach our children well so they don’t repeat the mistakes of our ancestors and ourselves.

South Carolina
The people of the State of South Carolina, in Convention assembled, on the 26th day of April, A.D., 1852, declared that the frequent violations of the Constitution of the United States, by the Federal Government, and its encroachments upon the reserved rights of the States, fully justified this State in then withdrawing from the Federal Union; but in deference to the opinions and wishes of the other slaveholding States, she forbore at that time to exercise this right. Since that time, these encroachments have continued to increase, and further forbearance ceases to be a virtue.

Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery-- the greatest material interest of the world. Its labor supplies the product which constitutes by far the largest and most important portions of commerce of the earth. These products are peculiar to the climate verging on the tropical regions, and by an imperious law of nature, none but the black race can bear exposure to the tropical sun. These products have become necessities of the world, and a blow at slavery is a blow at commerce and civilization. That blow has been long aimed at the institution, and was at the point of reaching its consummation. There was no choice left us but submission to the mandates of abolition, or a dissolution of the Union, whose principles had been subverted to work out our ruin.

They have endeavored to weaken our security, to disturb our domestic peace and tranquility, and persistently refused to comply with their express constitutional obligations to us in reference to that property, and by the use of their power in the Federal Government have striven to deprive us of an equal enjoyment of the common Territories of the Republic.

Texas abandoned her separate national existence and consented to become one of the Confederated Union to promote her welfare, insure domestic tranquility and secure more substantially the blessings of peace and liberty to her people. She was received into the confederacy with her own constitution, under the guarantee of the federal constitution and the compact of annexation, that she should enjoy these blessings. She was received as a commonwealth holding, maintaining and protecting the institution known as negro slavery-- the servitude of the African to the white race within her limits-- a relation that had existed from the first settlement of her wilderness by the white race, and which her people intended should exist in all future time. Her institutions and geographical position established the strongest ties between her and other slave-holding States of the confederacy. Those ties have been strengthened by association. But what has been the course of the government of the United States, and of the people and authorities of the non-slave-holding States, since our connection with them?
Now mind you, I've only excerpted from these Declarations of Secession, but what I've presented clearly shows the prominence that the institution of slavery had for those secessionists.

Wrong. The south gave us the commie FDR, that's where his voter base was. FDR is the man most responsible for the mess we're in now.
Southerners aren't any more inclined to freedom than Northerners, the only reason why southern states are more republican is because they're more rural. Compare a sample of rural northerners with rural southerners and the patterns will be the same. Compare urban southerners with urban northerners and the patterns would be the same. Our differences lie in rural vs urban today, not north vs south. The presidential election county maps prove it.
Southern children are taught that the war was all about slavery and not about states rights or independence. The South is made out to be the most evil section of the country because some folks there owned slaves, while nothing is mentioned about the huge sums of money the North made from the slave trade (Can't mention that too much. The North was the "righteous" one) Also, they fail to mention that less than ten percent (6% I think) of the white Southern population even owned any slaves. And of course, all those that did own slaves are made out to be the Simon Legree type of owner.
They are taught that Lincoln freed all the slaves, when in fact his emancipation proclamation did NOTHING. It 'freed' slaves in areas he had no control over, and specifically said that those in Yankee territory or Yankee occupied territory were to remain slaves. Shows he didn't really care about the slaves much at all. It was just a war measure, to cloak the Northern invasion in righteousness and make the European nations disinclined to join in on the side of the South. But the kids aren't taught that. They are taught that their ancestors were evil and that the invaders who burned farms and raped women were the good guys. But hey, propaganda, repeated often enough, sure can work.
That’s not the history I was taught.
