Rep. Grijalva: After Giffords Shooting, Tea Party and Palin Better Watch It
Mother Jones ^ | January 8, 2011 | Suzy Khimm

Posted on 01/08/2011 7:32:13 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

the wake of the attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and the shooting of more than 20 others in Tucson today, fellow Arizona Democrat Rep. Raul Grijalva denounced a political environment poisoned by "anger, hatred, and division." In a phone interview with Mother Jones, Grijalva called the assault "horrible and unbelievable and shocking….It's hard to explain and really difficult to comprehend." Grijalva—who was also the recent target of violent threats—went on to blame the polarized political climate for creating an atmosphere that fueled violence:

We never entered [politics] believing that we were taking our lives in our hands...we're feeding anger, hatred, and division for quite a while. Maybe it is time for elected officials and leaders in this country that have been feeding that disease to realize that there are consequences to it. I hope people stop and think that we can be opponents, but we don't have to be deadly enemies…to demonize another person because of a disagreement and to make them expendible is not a democracy, it's not the America I know.

Asked whether the tea party right deserved to be singled out for particular blame, Grijalva assented:

[When] you stoke these flames, and you go to public meetings and you scream at the elected officials, you threaten them—you make us expendable you make us part of the cannon fodder. For a while, you've been feeding this hatred, this division…you feed it, you encourage it….Something's going to happen. People are feeding this monster….Some of the extreme right wing has made demonization of elected officials their priority.

A number of prominent left-wing blogs, including Daily Kos and FireDogLake, also blamed Sarah Palin for fanning the flames by placing Giffords—along with other vulnerable Democratic members of Congress—literally in the crosshairs on a map during the midterm elections. Grijalva said that the Palin "apparatus" shares responsibility for creating a climate of extremism. "Both Gabby and I were targeted in the apparatus in that cycle [saying] these people are 'enemies.'" He concluded: "The Palin express better look at their tone and their tenor."

This guy is too blinded by his own ideology to understand that he is the problem.

I don’t recall them ever being described as “enemies”. I think Grijalva must be thinking of President Obama, who actually called on hispanics to punish their “enemies” and get revenge on them for opposing amnesty efforts. Has Grijalva(or any Dem or anyone in the media)said anything about Obama’s use of the word enemies, about Obama calling on hispanics to go after white people? Didn’t think so.

The word target has been a commonly accepted political terms for quite some time. As in “The Dems are targeting these seats”, “Sen X is a top target of party Y”, etc... Both parties use it, the media uses it.

There was no violence and Gov Palin never incited anyone to violence. Nor did the Tea Party. Everyone understood what context was being used.

Unfortunately some mental nutcase did something bad because of his own issues. That happens. He also shot 15 others or so. That tells you the guy is seriously ill. If this was truly politically motivated, he wouldn’t have gone after all the others. He just would have emptied the magazine on her(he was in point blank range, no reason not to). Political assassins don’t go after 15 other random people, they focus on their target.

Sounds like this guy may have schizophrenic issues.

Also, there was a post saying this guy had issues with her going back to 2007. The Tea Party or the GOP had nothing to do with this.

I’ve read about a hundred posts on different websites concerning who was responsible for this shooting. None blamed the shooter.

The left seems to think they have their Reichstag fire. They've been praying (scratch that, they don't pray, say “drooling” instead) for something like this for the past 18 months. Too bad the shooter is psycho nihilist.

Some of the extreme right wing has made demonization of elected officials their priority.

These people want to talk demonization?? This is rich. How about Reagan?? GW Bush?? Sarah Palin??

The talking point are out and gathering steam. And the republicans can't figure out how to respond. The democrats have already organized a conference call for tomorrow. Do we have NO political operatives that can work for our side?? Aarg!

Hitler's National SOCIALISTS (NAZIS) blamed the Reichstag Fire on a communist and used the "anarchy" as an excuse to eliminate their opposition and consolidate their power.

Our nation's socialists seem to be quite prepared to demonize the right whenever any outrage occurs. It's critical that we keep our communication networks running and stay prepared to expose the truth.

We better watch it... or what?

My inclination is to say bring it, but...some thoughts.

Gabby was/is my Congresswoman. I’ve been to two of her “townhalls”, meeting and talked to her at one of them - in a Safeway, in fact.

She is not the saint they are painting her, she is Pelosi’s lapdog, no matter that she voted against her. I’d look and see how late in the process she voted - was it after she was sure that Pelosi was going to be Minority Leader? Gabby almost lost this election, you can bet (if she continues in Congress) that she’ll vote against anything that she knows is going to go to the Libs as a matter of political cover and being able to point to her voting record next time she runs.

The Safeway “townhall” we went to allowed 2 hours to “talk to the Congresswoman”. The crowd was HEAVILY interspersed with SEIU members wearing T-shirts. I’ll bet she only talked to about 15 others in that 2 hours.

She was rude to me, I didn’t like her, I didn’t vote for her.

All that being said, she didn’t deserve this. We are praying for her recovery and to give her family strength. We are praying for the cruelly lost souls and their families. We are praying for America.

Arizona Democrat Rep. Raul Grijalva denounced a political environment poisoned by "anger, hatred, and division."

Anger, hatred, and division tend to arise when people in authority intentionally incite it.

It occurs to me that it would be really cool to have a mock trial sort of thing, with evidence presented by both sides of which side created a greater climate of extremism and spewed more vitriol. I know where my money would be.

And I think it’s the AP report about it that says it’s not clear whether he did the shooting because of healthcare or because of his own issues, which he talked about in his videos online.

They never even said what some of his “issues” were. Anybody looking at what he had on his sites knows he wasn’t mad about healthcare reform. The reporting on that was journalistic malpractice, since it referenced Loughner’s videos and thus knew what “issues” he had.

It would be sort of like saying, “It was unclear whether Hitler killed Jews in self-defense or whether there were other issues.” Anybody who knew enough to be writing an article would know darn good and well that there were other “issues” that were behind his murder of Jews. You’d have to be an idiot to not know that.

The AP knew full well Loughner wasn’t protesting Giffords’ healthcare stance. They’re just in full-blown deception mode. It makes me sick, and I hope it backfires big-time by making everybody else sick too. Confiscate his computer; find out what sites he’s been looking at. Then feed these liberal liars some of their own medicine.
