Why do conservative elites go out of their way to trash Palin?
The Ogden Standard-Examiner ^ | January 4, 2011 | Doug Gibson, Opinion Editor

Posted on 01/05/2011 8:44:43 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

I’ve noticed that George Will and Charles Krauthammer have taken time out of their many TV gigs to trash Sarah Palin. Other prominent conservatives seem to relish dissing the former Alaska governor. David Frum, Joe Scarborough, Peggy Noonan, David Brooks, Chris Christie; don’t forget Kathleen Parker, who parleyed her Palin envy into a CNN talk show that no one watches.

This is not an attack on these conservatives. I read them all and often find a lot of worth in what they opine. I don’t understand why they actively, often unprompted, go out of their way to bash Palin. I don’t recall in the past — unless you count Ronald Reagan — a steady drumbeat of prominent vocalized opposition, and off-the-wall bashing of previous presidential hopefuls — large and small — from within the party (Gary Bauer, Steve Forbes, Richard Lugar, John McCain, Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney …) The rationale is usually that Palin has no chance of winning and that her poll ratings are low. The latter point is conceded but given the regularly savage treatment she receives from the political class and the popular culture, she merits credit for being a survivor rather than a casualty. More classless commentary (favored by Brooks, Noonan, Frum and Parker) is that she’s not smart or sophisticated enough to be taken seriously.

I think a lot of the criticism — from the right — is arrogance disguised as disdain. I doubt Sarah Palin reads Peggy Noonan, David Brooks, Kathleen Parker, George Will or even Charles Krauthammer. Thomas Sowell, Mark Levin, Walter Williams, Victor Davis Hanson, David Limbaugh, Mark Steyn, Cliff May, S.E. Cupp, Star Parker, and other “new conservative” writers I suspect are her guides. It grinds on somebody like a Noonan, or a Brooks, who have reached the traditional heighths of their careers, to be ignored by a ”mere Palin” after they’ve been flattered and courted by so many for so long. That Wasilla mayor is not only not at the parties, she doesn’t even want to be there.

Look, I’m not claiming Palin is perfect, or she will win if she runs in 2012. I think it’s ridiculous to dismiss a potential candidate who worked hard to oppose the big-government assault Democrats launched in 2009 and campaigned hard to help the GOP gain the U.S. House. She is the spirit of the Tea Party movement, even while Mr. Frum grumbles that Republicans are doomed if they listen to her.

Can Sarah Palin win in 2012 if she runs? She’s tough enough to compete and she’ll need to be because she’ll have most of the political class — with many righty snipers – and 99 percent of the cultural class opposed to her. On the other hand, I recall the 2008 debates, and — although it’s moved through the memory hole — Palin was the most impressive of the four candidates.

Yes, she was.

Didn't really see any conservatives on that first list.

Because they are the recognized..by liberals and conservatives as the conservative “elite”. Sarah threatens them because she is a person of the people. She threatens all the establishment people who live in the right places, go to the right schools and the right cocktail parties. She is not on of them. None of them could get elected...and wouldn’t take the chance of ruining their position.

Wow, this is so strange you posted this! The Standard Examiner is my local paper, and I just commented on Doug’s observations at the Paper’s blog site.

I love Doug, he always gets the local liberal’s panties in a wad! :-)

I think Popcorn is pretty cheap if you buy the microwavable type (even the really good stuff).

Buying it in the lobby is always a BAD idea. You are talking pennies vs. dollars.

Now I have settled that, I’ll kick back and see how it all goes down...

She represents the Tea Party to the Country Club Repubs and they look down their noses at the riff raff.

Pray for the Tea Party Congress

Why did Karl Rove rip into Christine O'Donnell the night of her victory?

There is something seriously wrong with these people.

they spend so much time on her because she’s so popular and it annoys them. Over the decades we have had celebrities actors who want to be president because they play one in a movie, yet we never hear the disdain for them because of their inexperience, qualification or their intelligence or ignorance of issues. They never had a chance but most ppl just view, that its great that, anyone in America can be president if they work hard at it. Palin is treated so differently to everyone else. If Palin is such a dummy and never get elected, why spend so much time on her. Thats like bullying someone who get an F in class. Who cares

The simplest answer is that her parents are Pentecostals and she grew up in a Pentecostal family. She does not now attend a Pentecostal church.

None of that matters to your high church types (Epi-scopals, Reform Jews ~ including self proclaimed Atheists, ECLA members, etc.) All they care is that you belonged to a church where people jump up, wave their arms in the air, dance in church, and so on. You do that and you're off their list forever.

Why Will and the Kraut would be so ambitious to let us know how deep their religious bigotry goes is amazing. Maybe their mothers engaged in inappropriate toilet training or something ~ that always comes out in your declining years!

BTW, I'm just observing this stuff. Those who've followed me know I have my own concerns with something much more serious, to wit, the Apostolic Charismatic Church of the First Born (and its various permutations, particularly those who don't believe in doctors and let their kids die of treatable illnesses).

People like Will and the Kraut have no interest in such matters ~ their concerns end with the way the service is conducted, and if the kids are going out the backdoor into graves next to the sidewalk that takes you to the peyote chewing shed, they frankly don't care.

In their professed disdain for Sarah Palin, I see some old-fashioned intellectual snobbery expressed by both certain conservatives and the mavens of the Left. This has no place in a country that urgently needs some new blood in our political line-up, people not beholden to thwe “establishment,” both of the Left and of the Right.

These guys are “conservative” in the broader sense and do not want to have a woman as president. A large part of the conservatice movement is that way. That is why it has been so hard to elect Republican Negroes. Too many of our guys just won’t vote for them.We would have had more of them in the recent election if that reluctance were not there. I have my own apprehensions about putting a woman in the top spot, but that is a generic ambivalence that derives from the different foci of women and men re security vs liberty. But Palin does not seem to share that feminine trait and she is the closest thing we have to anything like Reagan right now. I see no sensible alternative to her at all. I do wish some potential candidate would demonstrate a basic knowledge of real Econ 101, though. Any woman who demonstrates that she understands Adam Smith or Ludwig von Mises is far superior to any man who is fuzzy on economics or thinks he is a Monetarist or “conservative” Keynesian. Get the Econ nailed down then bore in on social values. All the social conservatism in the world is to no avail if one doesn’t understand the economics.

My opinion FWIW - Palin’s name gets print. If you want to sell (yourself) you have to use HER. This pisses them off, so they show their cards. All to their own detriment.

You don't need to read farther into this piece than this to get the answer. Especially if you have any recollection or knowledge of the '76 or '80 GOP primaries. Elitist are always going to be elitists, even if you agree with them now and again.

Try the Pop Weaver caramel microwave popcorn. You don't have to add the bars of caramel like you used to, it's all in the bag.

Back when the Tea Parties first started raising hell at town hall meetings it was usually at Democrat legislator’s meetings. Later, when the mid-term elections got closer, RINOs got similar treatment. This shows that the Tea Party (and Sarah) oppose Big Government, regardless of which party it shows it’s head in.

Those “influential” columnists all owe their status to the “Good ol’ Boys” inside the beltway - Democrat and Republican, so it’s in their best interests to keep the status quo. Consequently, they beat the anti-Palin drum long and loud, knowing that constant repetition of a lie will have the same effect as if it were the truth. It’s up to us to counter that drumbeat.

Stay the course folks. I have no idea who will be the Republican nominee, though I hope it’s Sarah. In the meantime I intend to speak out for her when I can and vote for the best candidate available when the time comes. One thing for sure though: I will NOT vote for whomever the media pushes onto the ballot!
