Great comment. It is so ironic that the biggest defenders of the PC line “Islam is a peaceful religion” are the left-wingers in America who would be the most persecuted under Islamic Law!

"How can people be so blind to what goes on under Sharia law?"

To be a liberal, you have to be blind to everything!

The biggest reason we have a problem with creeping sharia is the cupidity and ignorance of female news reporters. Plug them into an Islamic setting for a month and they will cry "kings X" and pretend none of it was relevant to their own life experience.

White girls who have never lived out from under the umbrella of Christianity don't know what they are missing.

I have an aunt that was in college in the 60’s and was very Liberal. Naturally, she is now conservative. She once told me that in her day, liberals were mostly very intelligent (albeit idealist) people, while today they are mostly the uneducated and the ignorant. I find the point valid.

If this Brown woman even was perceived as agreeing with Franklin one iota she would have been shunned by her far left PC crowd. The dinner and cocktail party invites would dry up. These type of people just can't be seen thinking for themselves - they have to try to minimize conflict and reach consensus without critically testing, analyzing, and evaluating ideas. They are idiots!

I don't know that they're blind to it, so much as flummoxed as to what can be done about it -- and to be honest, it's not a simple problem.

Sharia Law is really a cultural issue, and a throwback to a much simpler time... It can really only exist in isolation, and Islam is no longer isolated from the rest of the world.

I think there is tremendous cultural pressure on Islam to move away from it's primitive customs; and I think that pressure is in large part responsible for the growth of Islamofascism: it's a defensive response.

IMO, women are the key to ending Sharia. Allowing them simple human rights and education would cause Islamic society to crumble -- and the Islamofascists know it. That's why fanatics like the Taliban are so hard on women.

Franklin Graham’s remarks about Islam and Sharia Law were right on the mark. Short, precise and true.

She once told me that in her day, liberals were mostly very intelligent (albeit idealist) people, while today they are mostly the uneducated and the ignorant. I find the point valid.

Careful how you cast stones there, FRiend.... It's just as easy and just as valid to say the same thing about conservatives. Who among the leaders (so-called) of the Conservative movement can boast the intellectual credentials of a Buckley, Kirk, or Reagan? (Are those crickets I hear...?) Who, on the other hand, can you name who plays to the emotions of conservatives? (Palin, Limbaugh, Hannity....?)

The problem isn't so much in a person's political outlook, though -- you can see the same thing on both sides. It's the culture.

We live in a culture that promotes and rewards immediate emotional gratification.

There's no patience anymore for extended, rational debate. The media are geared toward short attention spans and 6th grade reading levels, and (apparently) that's what most people want -- it's a feedback loop. (To see just how far we've fallen, I suggest you go look at some of Homer_J_Simpson's posts from the NYT of 70 years ago.)

As for politics ... it's all about getting the sound-bites (and getting paid off by lobbyists). Compromise is grounds for excommunication (the frequent and mindless use of "RINO" being a prime example). Even the "Tea Party" movement is an essentially emotional response to legitimately bad government policies.

And when it comes to something like Sharia law ... the response is again, mostly emotional on both sides of the question.

Commonly referred to as female genital cutting or female circumcision, a clitoridectomy is usually performed for cultural or religious reasons, which may vary from culture to culture. In some areas, the surgery is thought to maintain cleanliness, while others believe removing the clitoris will prevent women from engaging in premarital sex. Although practiced throughout the world, the procedure is most common in parts of Asia and Africa.

The procedure is often accompanied by infibulation, or the stitching together of the vulva. This is usually done following the removal of the clitoris, when the woman’s labia major is sewn together, leaving an opening small enough for only urine and menstrual blood to pass through. Prior to marriage, the opening must be enlarged to allow for penetration during intercourse, a process that can take three or more months.

In addition to sexual dysfunction, a clitoridectomy has many long-term effects including incontinence, sterility, increased susceptibility for the AIDS virus, and even death. Medical complications are common since the person who performs the procedure is generally not medically trained, but rather a parent or elderly member of the community. The surgery is usually performed without anesthesia, with a razor, glass shard, or other unsterilized instrument. As a result, tetanus, hemorrhages, and massive scarring can also occur. There are also long-term psychological effects, including depression, anxiety, and reduced self-esteem.

Most women do not choose to undergo a clitoridectomy, as the surgery is typically performed on girls between the ages of four and eight. These girls are usually tied or held down during the procedure. Estimates suggest that approximately 130 million women and girls across the globe have been forced to have the surgery. Now considered a form of violence against women, the clitoridectomy has been banned in many areas of the world. Despite this, however, many cultures continue to practice the procedure.

“Are they just that stupid or are they complicit”

Complicit. Campy Brown dated a Saudi prince when the King of Arabia visited the Bush ranch. She buried stories of their demands about women not being visible at the airport,, etc.

A description of an infibulation
By M.A.S. Mustafa, of Djibouti,
from the thesis of Dr. Alan David

‘The little girl, entirely nude, is immobilised in the sitting position on a low stool by at least three women. One of them with her arms tightly around the little girl’s chest; two others hold the child’s thighs apart by force, in order to open wide the vulva. The child’s arms are tied behind her back, or immobilized by two other women guests. The traditional operator says a short prayer: “Allah is great and Mahomet is His Prophet. May Allah keep away all evils.” Then she spreads on the floor some offerings to Allah: split maize, or, in urban areas, eggs.

Then the old woman takes her razor and excises the clitoris. The infibulation follows: the operator cuts with her raxor from top to bottom of the small lip and then scrapes the flesh from the inside of the large lip. This nymphectomy and scraping are repeated on the other side of the vulva. The little girl howls and writhes in pain, although strongly held down. The operator wipes the blood from the wound and the mother, as well as the guests, “verify” her work, sometimes putting their fingers in. The amount of scraping of the large lips depends upon the “technical” ability of the operator. The opening left for urine and menstrual blood is miniscule.

Then the operator applies a paste and ensures the adhesion of the large lips by means of an acacia thorn, which pierces one lip and passes through into the other. She sticks in three or four in this manner down the vulva. These thorns are then held in place either by means of sewing thread, or with horse-hair. Paste is again put on the wound.

But all this is not sufficient to ensure the coalescence of the large lips; so the little girl is then tied up from her pelvis to her feet: strips of material rolled up into a rope immobilize her legs entirely. Exhausted, the little girl is then dressed and put on a bed. The operation lasts from fifteen to twenty minutes according to the ability of the old woman and the resistance put up by the child.’
