The storys protagonist, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), is a former Marine who was wounded and paralyzed from the waist down in combat on Earth. Jake is selected to participate in the Avatar program, which will enable him to walk. Jake travels to Pandora, a lush jungle-covered extraterrestrial moon filled with incredible life forms, some beautiful, many terrifying. Pandora is also home to the Navi, a sentient humanoid race that are more physically capable than humans, although considered primitive. Standing three meters tall, with tails and sparkling blue skin, the Navi live in harmony with their unspoiled world. As humans encroach deeper into Pandora's forests in search of valuable minerals, the Navi unleash their formidable warrior abilities to defend their threatened existence. Jake has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this encroachment. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have created genetically-bred human-Navi hybrids known as Avatars. The Avatars are living, breathing bodies that are controlled by a human "driver" through a technology that links the driver's mind to their Avatar body. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake can be whole once again. Sent deep into Pandora's jungles as a scout for the soldiers that will follow, Jake encounters many of Pandora's beauties and dangers. There he meets a young Navi female, Neytiri, whose beauty is only matched by her ferocity in battle. Over time, Jake integrates himself into Neytiri's clan, and begins to fall in love with her. As a result, Jake finds himself caught between the military-industrial forces of Earth, and the Navi, forcing him to choose sides in an epic battle that will decide the fate of an entire world. [D-Man2010]
Avatar is set during the 22nd century on a small moon called Pandora, which orbits a gas giant, and is inhabited by the tribal Na'vi, ten foot blue humanoids that are peaceful unless attacked. Humans cannot breathe Pandoran air, so they genetically engineer human/Na'vi hybrids known as Avatars that can be controlled via a mental link. A paralyzed Marine named Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) volunteers to exist as an Avatar on Pandora, falling in love with a Na'vi princess and becoming caught up in the conflict between her people and the human military that is consuming their world.
Sounds like a good movie if you want your kids to feel guilty for their very existence....
I’m looking forward to seeing it for the visuals alone. Seems to be pretty standard sci fi fare plotwise.
People do you see what your kids are up against just like that Wally movie same story line lazy fat humans destroying planet ....This propaganda is all around us there is no escape from these enviro marxists.
Break out a board game or go outside and have a catch while you can keep them away from this TV and movie assault by the leftists.
The only acceptable villains in today’s films are evil white industrialists. Which tells you everything you need to know about the prejudices and bigotry of contemporary American society.
Its nothing more than propaganda demonize military and humans for destroying the planet Al Gore would be proud
Its easy to see whats happening once you open your eyes and get your head out of your ......
I Watched the preview and it seems like a good movie. My grandchildren watch the cartoon and it seems harmless enough. I may enjoy watching it myself....
BFD! It's fiction / fantasy. I'll se it at least a couple of times and expect to buy the Blue Ray as soon its available.
You are confusing Avatar with Avatar: The Last Airbender. Not the same thing.
That sucks.
The cartoon is a Japanese anime called Avatar the last Airbender. It’s definitely not the same story lines or plots as Cameron’s Avatar.
Yep.
Again its pretty standard sci fi fare and has been for decades. One of my guilty pleasures was “Silent running” starring Bruce Dern. Hell, Joan Baez sang the theme music for it. Besides, who couldn’t love the idea of Dern blowing himself up with a nuke?
Star Trek did their politically correct stuff in the original series as well. It really isn’t anything new.
Avatar is nothing like the TV series. The movie “The Last Airbender” is the one based on the cartoon.
The trailer I saw looked like total crap.
I was rolling my eyes when 26 years ago when I first watched ROTJ in the theater. Stone-age teddy bears defeating a starship-wielding empire? I don't care if Stormtroopers can't shoot very well, it was absurd.
This is why I haven't been to a movie theater since Star Trek, and hadn't been to one for years prior.
“The story’s protagonist, Jake Sully... “
That’s all I needed to know. Now I’m definitely not going to see this movie. The clueless idiots that write these movies can’t seem to get past the fact that there are more male names out there besides Jack, Jake, and Johnny.
Henceforth I’ll boycott any movie where a main character has one of those names. I mean, seriously folks, why does every movie made in the last 15 years have to have one or more of these names as a significant (usually main) character? The only exceptions seem to be movies adapted from books, and even then it’s no guarantee of an original moniker.
“The trailer I saw looked like total crap.”
I totally agree!
Just to round out the story for everyone’s edification:
Once the protaganist (the half-human half-Na’vi Jake) integrates himself into Neytiri’s clan, he begins to call himself by his full name, “Jake Hussein Sully.”
Neytiri’s clan calls their home on Pandora “Altgeld Gaardyns.”
Captured Na’vi are forced by their human captors to work on cotton plantations.
And finally (warning: spoiler!) Jake and the Na’vi prevail at last over the humans when Jake manages to impose crippling taxation and indebtedness on the human civilization that ultimately brings them down.
Is this the sci-fi version of Dances with Wolves
